Default something a little different

Hi,

I am planning on spendng around 2 months in Cambodia and another 2/3 in Vietnam at the start of next year.

I want to do something slightly different while there, am looking for any ideas from bicycle treks to homestays. I dont have a massive budget and dont really want to do tours where possible.

Does anyone know if it is possible to hire a bike for Angkor Wat and do it myself? Or is it better to get a guide? I do have a fair amount of time and wont be rushed.

Where is a good place to do some diving in Vietnam or Cambodia?

Any info would be great.

Thanks

I visited Angkor for 3 days earlier his year. On the first day I decided to hire a bike, I figured this would allow me to take things at my own pace, make my own decisions etc. While hiring the bike was no problem and getting to the temple sights was easy enough I found I was hassled outside the temples from people asking to look after my bike while I go into the temple. After a day of this my budget was getting a bit stretched and so at the last temple I politely refused services offered to me (I had a really good pad lock so figured all would be fine). I returned from the last temple to find my bike had 2 flat tires. Between the hassle and the heat I was put off doing it alone. The next 2 days I hired a guide. He was brilliant and I found days with him to be calmer.

Have a brilliant trip.

Loving the pacing of your trip. Long time, only two countries. In Cambodia we have much more than temples and genocide. Great you'll be able to see that.

I have lots of advice I could give but not sure if you still check this forum.

All I'll say now is make sure you come visit us up in Ratanakiri. Beautiful landscape, diverse people. It's awesome. Lots of possibilities for individual travel.

Reply here or drop me a PM if you want more info.

Nha Trang is a good place to do diving in Vietnam, or Hoi An is the second choice . Northen Vietnam is just a wonderful place to do motorbiking , you can just hire a bike (cheaper) and go or pick up a motorbike tour company ( not as cheap ) .

Have a good time here !

Even if you hire a bike to visit Angkor wat, you should find a tour guide. So you will understand more about Angkor wat. The Angkor's history is very interesting. And the tour guide will take you to all the most beautiful temples. In Vietnam you can go diving in Nha Trang, Mui Ne, Phu Quoc. In the north you can go diving in Co to island but it's not very beautiful. Phu Quoc and Nha Trang is the best choice.

Sihanoukville is the most famous for diving in cambodia.
