I contacted the Vietnam embassy here in Canada and they quoted me $93CDN for processing a visa application.

How much does it typically cost in SE Asia? I read on this forum about how you can get it same day in Sihanoukville, but that is a fair bit of my path. Any other places with quick Visa?

to the travel forum. That sounds pretty steep for visa processing. In Bangkok I paid closer to $30-$35CDN for my Vietnam visa, and I think I got it same-day too (although this was 4 years ago now).

A little clarification about "get visa at airport" might be needed.

For Vietnam you MUST have a visa before arrival at the border. One exception is if arriving by air. In this case you can pre-arrange an e-visa letter normally arranged via an agent through the internet.

I can confirm Sihanoukville is a same day service and cheap. A visa can also be obtained in Phnom Penh if your heading that way.

Hi last time I went to Vietnam 2008 , my ticketing agent , in London , arranged Visa at reduced rate when I bought ticket , also they did not charge P&P which greatly add to charge .
Could it be that the charge quoted includes P&P , here in UK Vietnamese Embassy charge 8 GBP for postage for 1 return , just checked today .
Bangkok is a good place to obtain visas , most same day , through agents or in person , be prepared for long wait .
