Default Is it me or are the Tailors going worse

I don't know if it is me but the last couple of times we have been to Thailand the tailors have been a real pain in the backside. I don't want anything making. Dave does not wear suits for work. Clothes are so cheap in the UK now that they don't compete.
Sometimes I have found that they ruin my night with their persistant haggling and they won't let it drop.

I don`t know Jax,for me they have always been a pain in the a*se.I reckon I could tolerate them better if it`s a Thai person trying his/her best but the Indian gets under my craw(hope that doesn`t come across racist)I actually had one man along Chaweng physically grab me & try to get me in to his shop so that experience has really soured me towards tailors.

Just a little off topic but has anyone with several trips experience noticed that the hawkers a long Chaweng Beach seem to be a little less invasive(for want of a better word)than they were maybe 4-5 yrs ago??Just my observation!!!!

Jamie

I have found that generally only the poor tailors hassle for business- the good ones don't need to hassle to get the customers in the door.. As for the hawkers they might be now recognizing you as a frequent visitor who knows the ropes?

Yeah you`re probably right about the tailors, as with any business that does well, the business comes to them they don`t have to hassle.

I don`t know about being recognized by the hawkers but I found using "my ow khap"helped

I guess the r.o.t is basically to never enter those hassling shops and i got another way to make them bugger off:

indian man - "hello sir, u want suit? good suit. ready 24 hours sir"
you - "oh yes, i got a very good suit, its from that shop over there (at this moment you point to some random suit shop down the road)."
indian man - "arghhh..(starts making faces and swearin at u)
you - (smile and walk away)

lemme know if it works :)

Personally I've never been hassled by any tailor, perhaps my wheelchair frightens them
Just a couple of times just the asked me if I were italian....Oh god, do I look so italian? Black hair, brown eyes, italian style dresses, with a piece of pizza in my hands and a pack of spaghetti in another....

It all depends on picking a good one. When we were in Krabi last year we found a brilliant guy who made my husband some shirts (and he is so cynical - husband that is) but they have been worn virtually every day and wash and iron brilliantly. Excellent value for money so it is like everything else - some are good, some bad it's just a case of picking a good one!!

I've never noticed any difference in them in the last 5 years. If you look like you need a tailor they hassle you, if you present the attitude of why are they even trying to talk to you, they leave you alone. Just my experiences.
