Do you prefer samui or phuket and why?
Phuket
Good infrastructure.
Nice beaches away from paatong
Within reach of Krabi, phi phi, koh Lanta.
Choice of airlines to get there.
It's still thailand.
Samui.
Amazing food. Consistently good. Wide range.
More rustic in parts
Cute airport
Lovely natural beaches in places
The night beach scene in chewang
small island, I like that feel.
Within reach of KP and KT.
athmosphere.
Near full moon if that blows your skirt up.
And yourself or can you compare 2 other destinations?

| | I like both
I don't like Chaweng during the day, nor do I like (actually I detest) Patong. I think Samui has better and safer beaches, but Phuket much more in the way of resources. All other things being equal (do not forget the different monsson seasons), if I had to chose one or the other I would go Phuket, just, but selectively. But I would certainly try to do both. |

| | I vote Samui
I prefer the ruggedness and 'Hippy like' feel of Samui. Phuket is more refined with proper roads etc, which is not a bad thing. Just that i like the simplicity and laid back atmosphere in Samui (i do have to admit that i even like Chaweng though).
Was only there for a week last time, going for 2 in June so should have a better idea when we return. Will provide a JBR.

Samui. I just think theres so much more charm about samui. To be on just one stretch of road throughout and everyone knowing where the main place to party is, where the main good restaurants are. It just makes it a better place as a whole. Phuket is a big place, too many tailors, and just..normal.

still here, slow ride down, stop in bkk, chumphon, just extende stay at hotel 3 more days here, then head back, slow again, few days to get to bkk, few days there, then maybe a stop on the way back up.
to stay on topic, phuket, main reason, i think the beachs are much more swimmable, i like to see my feet at all times, clear water. familiarity is probably the next reason, know it well and a few restaurants that never dissappoint. only been to samui once and didn't do much for myself, i understand the attraction, just not for me.

I don't like Samui, too much mess in Chaweng, even more than Patong, more chaotic. Patong is a mess, but at list you can move around, in Chaweng the street is very narrow, with a little rain all is flooded, the pavements are bumpy and narrow, and the worst thing is that you walk on chaweng and don't see the sea, at least in Patong you can walk on the beachfront road and watch the sea.
I don't agree with Mark, that Samui has better beaches, where you fin in Samui beaches like Nai Harn, Nai Yang, Nai Thon, Karon , Kata? In Samui the only comparable beach is Chaweng, Lamai in my opinion is not so good, then there's Bophut which is quiet but I could compare with Rawai. And the color of the sea is even better in Rawai....
Then there's the fact that Phuket is Thailand, with a thai city inhabited by thais, Samui is a piece of land throwed in the hands of tourists. And not so many tailors apart from Patong and Kata, in Nai Harn there isn't a single tailor if this means anything
No, for me Phuket wins 12-0
Of course this is only my opinion....

| | Love them both.
At the end of the day, both of these fabulous places will provide an amazing holiday and you would choose between based on the time of year and your personal needs. I would think if I was young and single and wanted to party with other young and singles then Chaweng would be where I would head. It is a pity that you cant see the beach from the main road like at Patong but at least most of the accomadation is beach front. I think Kata and Nai Harn are the equal to Chaweng in scenic, beach quality but neither have the range of nightlife that is on offer at Chaweng.
Both have an amazing array of restaraunts and judging one over the other is more dependant on which ones that you have been to and it is proberbly unfair rate them as a whole. I prefer the little Thai owned local Restaraunts and you can find these dotted all over the place on both islands.
I would be more likely to go back to Kata beach next year as I am looking for a more layback style holiday these days on a beautiful beach but I am sure I will revisit Chaweng as soon as the kids are old enough to leave at home.
And Claudio, sorry to pull you up mate , but there is a tailor in Nai Harn near the entrance to the Yacht Club. They dont stand out the front and bother you as you walk passed though as they have no competition.
