Default Restaurant Review- Basilico's Bangkok

Some of the old members will have read Emdee's review of this restaurant in 2006. Emdee's review gave me the impetus to visit the restaurant on our recent trip to Thailand and to update his previous review as at that time the restaurant was only fairly recently opened.

The restaurant is located at Sukumvit Soi 33 and is easy to find .It is near the BTS at Phrom Phong when you get off the sky train on the left hand side if coming fromSiam-walk back down Sukumvit and the Soi 33 is the second Soi on the left. In fact its just near the Novotel Lotus hotel which is about 50 metres down the Soi.Its easy to find.

We visited the restaurant on a Wednesday night at 7pm and by this time it was already 75% full- we had checked out the place around lunch time and decided to book for dinner that night. A wise move as the place is popular although I suspect if you just turn up you have a fair chance of getting a table as its a fairly large place and has a casual atmosphere.. The air conditioning was great on the usual hot and steamy BKK nights .

We had requested a table near the front so we could do some people watching and we noticed a fairly popular "massage "parlour opposite the place. The comings and goings made for good conversation as the girls touted for customers. the girls were pretty scratchy in my view and my better half was not overly impressed with their antics but they didn't notice us over the road.

I started with a small Singa beer which promptly arrived at 125bt plus service charge and tax. My partner settled for a cold bottle of water at 30 bt ++.(7% and 10%). We were offered a variety of bread sticks but declined- in fact they were put on the table without us requesting them and they cost 75bt++. A short time later they were put on the table again by another waiter and once again I asked for them to be taken away.

We decided to order a pizza each. I had a quatro Stagione at 260 bt ++ and my partner the same. The pizza's arrived after about 15-20 minutes. They were large and one would have been enough for the two of us. The lipstick lover struggled to eat all hers and I helped out but it certainly slowed me down. The pizza was ok but nothing to write home about- the crust, although from a wood fired oven was average plus. We both rated the pizza as a 6.5 out of ten. The fillings were adequate but not overflowing. I certainly had had better quatro's back home in Oz but this is not a complaint. The place was clean and buzzed along- there were so many waiters they were falling over themselves looking for something to do so service was not an issue.

We had ordered a carafe of house red at 450bt ++. This contained three medium glasses of wine, about 120ml each. By the glass it was 150 bt ++, The quality was ok-ish. I suspect a rough Italian red- you know, one of those 1.5 litre bottles you can buy for $8-$10 back home and supposedly from Montepulciano. Anyway it went down ok with the pizzas.

The better half decided that as I was paying she would have a Mai Tai. This was 220bt ++ and was declared to be "quite good".

We were out by 9pm and our bill totalled 1671 bt which was in my view, a bit expensive for the night as we both thought we had done a lot better in other places for around the 1000-1200bt mark.

In all I would say 6.5 for food, 8/10 for service and 9/10 for cleanliness and 6/10 for prices. If I went again I would order only one pizza for two, not drink the wine and stick to beer and no coctails. This would make for a cheaper casual night out.
