Default silly ? about alcohol

Hi folks--wondering about alcohol in Thailand--what's the scoop about wine imports there? Is there a problem getting inexpensive white wines in Hua Hin? I can drink beer, but prefer wine or vodka--what's the local version of either--like sake or firewater?
I figured there must be some all-knowing, all-drinking source here--thanks a bunch!!

wine is very expensive and does not travel well. We are red wine drinkers what we do buy we get from the local Tesco lotus or makro.
In my opinion the Thai wine is horrendous and not at all pleasant.
you will pay top dollar all over and it is not worth the extra for something that you would buy at home as the cheapest around.

Hi kyshel,
Yes, jax's advice is correct - wine is expensive in Thailand. What we know to be bottom of the range wine becomes a fairly expensive drink in Thailand.
You're better off with beer or spirits.
Although I'm not a beer drinker, in the heat of Thailand I often have a beer - I don't mind the local brew "Chang".
But there's no need to buy local 'firewater' (and the Mekong whisky is in that category). Buy your vodka when you arrive at Suvarnabhumi duty free shops - a few in arrivals. All the popular brands are available, including the flavoured ones, and cheap too.

When you run out, you can buy spirits at supermarkets, special alcohol shops and even 7-11 stores - still very reasonable price. Just remember you can't buy alcohol in the afternoons (I think it's between 2pm and 5pm, or is it 7pm???).

wines are more expensive, due to that 30 % import tariff, although some nice wines can be found for decent price, as much or a bit more than home. but i found wines don't go good with real thai food, the spicey flavor and wine jus don't compliment each other.

A nice cold crisp dry white is ok with Thai food - something like a Sauvignon Blanc (Mt. Riley from New Zealand or Dalfarras from Australia or perhaps even one from Chile) Mmmmmm
But an icy cold Chang is also good!

Yes, interesting (even if they don't have much in the way of decent Sauvignon Blanc on their list!).
I think the most interesting thing was the little pop-up advising any Thai under 18 to exit the website!! Geeez, not even able to LOOK???

Smile Vodka

When we were in Phuket last year you could buy a bottle of vodka at a 7/11 for about 350bt. It is also sold in supermarkets and I thought it was cheaper to buy it there then duty free.
Supermarket at MBK has a big selection of alcohol but you do have to watch what time it is as they do have time restrictions.
