It is difficult for a foreigner to obtain work in Thailand. Thai wages are low, lower than what you get in the UK. You need a work permit to work in Thailand and they are hard to get. This expat forum explains some of the problems you will encounter.

Foreigners who work for foreign owned companies get better wages but most of those jobs are arranged overseas before you enter Thailand. Legitimate foreign companies do all of the paperwork for you to make your stay legal. If you have a specific skill that is in demand you may have a better chance. Like I said, Thai wages are low and often those jobs are manual labor type employment.
Phuket is more expensive than just about any city in Thailand. Even Bangkok is cheaper to stay in. Local transportation in Phuket is expensive. If you are out to party Pattaya is cheaper for everything but the beach is no good for swimming. Okay for sunbathing, bars, restaurants, malls, etc.
With UK passport you can enter for 30 days for free. This is called a visa exemption.
Up to you.
