Question Exploring Ayutthaya

This is a question for anyone who has visited Ayutthaya. Will 1.5 days be enough to see most of the city? I've read that renting a bicycle is a good way to get around.

The reason I ask is that my guide in Bangkok has recommended a guided tour of Ayutthaya. I originally thought the city was small enough to explore on my own but now I'm wondering if I need a guide.

Thanks.

I have rented a tuk tuk. If you browse Ayuttaya, the town itself, then venture by the river, where the evening market it, there is a nice athmosphere and a nice view on the temple on the other side of the river!

Then for exploring the old city, one day is more then enough. I rented a Tuk-tuk, who showed me around. With a guide, you will learn more about the place, but then you have to be interested in details of ancient history!!

Thanks tintin. Great photos by the way. I have the nikon d80 and I'm looking forward to trying out a few new lenses while traveling Thailand.

Did you arrive in Ayutthaya by train? I was wondering if the station is close to the old city. Within walking distance.

I did take a taxi from Don Muang. Slept in the evening in a guesthouse in Ayuttaya. Next day, did the sightseeing with the Tuk tuk, who brought me to the Kings summer palace, a bit closer to BKK (forgot the name of the place!) and took the train from the station close by. Better inform on the scedule before, we had to wait quite some time!
