Heaps of good places- Holiday Inn right on the beach (over the road) is worth a look if you want to spend around $150 a night. A 4-5 star place. If after something cheaper i've also stayed at the Patong Lodge Hotel which is about a 20 minute walk from the beach area or a 150 bt tuk tuk fare. Has a good sized pool and the rooms aren't too bad- its a bit old but a cheaper option at around $50 a night for a double. Its a 2-2.5 star place. Mixed reviews on some sites but we had a good time there and no complaints except the air con broke down but they moved us without any hassles.

You should consider staying in the Rawai / Nai Harn area - its much nicer and cheaper with some of the best beaches on the island yet only 20 mins from all the craziness that is Patong - which IMO is way too smelly, seedy and crowded.

As has been said already there are far nicer places on Phuket to stay than Patong. Having said that for a few days you are in the heart of the action and can immerse yourself in all the hustle bustle and general seediness. There are loads of shopping opportunities and the nightlife is extremely active.

I like the Holiday Inn there and favour their Busakorn wing. They have a particularly fine steak restaurant called Sams which is most definitely worth a visit.

Depending on how long you plan to stay give yourself a few days there then move on to somewhere quieter - if that's your thing.

We favour more up market places when staying in Thailand rather than trying to do things on thin air. If you want some suggestions for up market places on the Island then make a post.

Henry
