Default visa extensions

does anyone know anything about visa extensions?

i came into thailand with a 90-day non-immigrant type B visa so i could work for 3 months at a school. it expires just after my job ends. then i'll be traveling around the country, but by that time the visa has expired.

so far, all i got out of the school administration is that i can leave the country and re-enter, and that will get me a new visa. but that is not in my travel plans. is there a site somewhere with more information about visa extensions? has anyone done something like this?

thanks,
liz

Looks like the school administration is quite right. Assuming that you are a citizen from one of the countries who will get a 30 days visa by arrival you will have to leave the kingdom and re-enter to get this 30 days visa - whether it's not in your plans or not. If you want to stay even longer you may need to apply for an extended visa at an embassy or consulate in e.g Malaysia, Myanmar, or Cambodia.

Since you supposedly are in Thailand right now I would advice you to visit the local Immigration Office to get further information.

A non immigrant B visa is not the same as a tourist visa...you don't get extensions for tourism purposes.

A 3 month non-immigrant B visa is delivered to foreigners working in Thailand... usually you require a letter from your employer and a signed contract to get one. Only when you have a three month visa can you apply for a work permit. Once you have a work permit you then get a one year non Immigrant B visa.

While you are on a 3 month non imm B visa you are free to stay in the country until it expires even if you have left your job. This isn't the case with the year long visa. It's totally dependent on your work contract. If you quit your job or get sacked then you have 7 days to leave the country.

In your case you will not be eligible for an extension of your non-Immigrant B visa because you will no longer be working for your school. You will have to leave the country when it expires anyway.

Depending on how long you want to stay after that you can either get a free 30 day entry stamp or a 60 day tourist visa from a Thai consulate outside Thailand.

thanks for the info.

i talked to the administration again and they said i can apply for a one-time, 1 week thing (i'm not sure what to call it because its not an extension of the original visa, i think its a new tourist visa?) for a 1900฿ fee. lucky for me, the new thing should expire on the day i leave. its all still very vague to me, but they are taking me to the immigration office on tuesday morning. if that doesn't work out, i'll have to find a way to get out of the country and come back in...
