Just take the bus, or minivan to Mai Sai, cross into Myanmar ($10US), then turn around, and come back. or look around the town, maybe go to the casino. It's pretty easy.

You get a basic day pass, and they hold your passport at the border. You can't go inland into Myanmar this way. The same situation at the border point at Mai Sot in the West.

It also depends on what kind of visa you are renewing. If you just need a 30 day visa exempt stamp, then the Myanmar border is the ticket, but If you need to get a 60 day tourist visa, or any other type of visa, then your best bet is to go to Vientaine in Laos, and that isn't exactly easy.
