Sorry for your loss. Keep in mind that not all thefts from hotels are by the hotel staff. Too often it is your fellow tourists who break into rooms and steal stuff!
Sometimes having a slightly more expensive room that has a safe or safety box pays off. When I look for a cheap hotel in Thailand and the room does not have a safe or safety box I do not stay there! When I leave my room even in better hotels I never leave any valuables out and still lock my bags.
On the road I leave my expensive computers at home and travel with a small cheap netbook. For Thailand there is almost always an inexpensive internet shop you can use anyway. Netbook computers may fit in a safety box while larger laptops do not!
Password protect any computer you bring with you because if it is stolen someone else will be sending emails in your name! Not to mention for any bank accounts or personal information you want to keep private DO NOT choose
"save password" on your computer or someone else will be accessing that data!
For Thailand I keep my passport
locked up but I do have several copies of the visa page and information page available with me and other identification. Getting a passport replaced overseas is too much of a hassle now days.
Again, sorry for your loss.
