I is helpful to mention your price range. Also mention if you are a male or female or a couple. Different suggestions for different people. Plan a budget out and see how much per night you can afford for a hotel room/hostel.

For Bangkok, if you are young, in school or just out of school, perhaps the Khao San Road area will do. A couple, or maybe more mature, perhaps a hotel in the Siam or Sukhumvit area might be better so you can use the Skytrain and walk to many things like malls, street vendors, restaurants and even nightlife.

Once you leave Bangkok there are not so many hostels in Thailand. But there are many cheap, small hotels and guest houses that you can use.

Bangkok hostels and cheap hotels you can consider.
Bangkok, Thailand Hostel – Cool, Discount, Boutique Bangkok Hostel – Lub d
Soi 1 Guesthouse, Bangkok - Guest Rooms

Other areas:
Udee Bangkok - A Homelike Hostel
Nice place to stay in Bangkok

Get a couple travel guides, even go to a library and check some out. Read up on Thailand and plan your moves then ask for hotel suggestions, etc. My advice is to start in Bangkok. Then head out to Chiang Mai or some beach area. A final night in Bangkok comes in handy for last minute shopping.

From the airport to the Pratunam area of Bangkok there is a new Airport Rail Link. That rail link connects with the Skytrain at Phaya Thai. Meter taxis available at the airport 24 hours a day. (Wait until you get to Thailand to change any money over to Thai baht for the better exchange rate. No problem changing money at the airport 24 hours a day.)

Good luck.

Where in Thailand are you traveling? I know some cool guesthouses/small hotels...not sure I would stay in hostels though, unless you are on a serious budget!!
