I have traveled extensively solo and rely heavily on guide books for information. My favorite one is Lonely Planet because it is written by travelers. Once you get there, you'll probably meet other backpackers/foreign travelers, but when you first start out your guide book is likely to be your best friend!

Hi Adam, I am travelling the same area as you over December, also Solo but am on an organised tour so if you're free styling on your own, it doesn't seem like I can be your buddy, would be nice to chat about your packing plans though, I am backpacking and expecting to do a lot of walking, I'm not expecting the cold, not sure whether to go flip flops all the way or proper walking boots, do I need a waterproof?
