Default A Very Good Read

I have just finished reading Saving The Unsaveable: Monarchy and Democracy In Thailand by Soren Ivarsson.

This book is a real eye opener on what happens - and has happened - behind the scenes in Thailand. I heartily recommend it to anyone who has travelled to Thailand and wondered "how is that so"?

Thanks for the tip on this Emdee.

For those on the forum who might have difficulty in getting a copy I notice that the Book Depository has copies
("Saying the Unsayable (Paperback)by Soren Ivarsson) at $ A28.37 with free postage- The hardcover copy is considerably more expensive.

It certainly looks like a good read.

And don't take the current Thai book I'm reading either; The King Never Smiles by Paul M. Handley. Phew! Talk about royal court intrigue. It delves behind the public persona of HRH King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Thus far it is a highly readable book.

I hope Messrs Handley and Ivarsson don't have any plans for returning to Thailand - like for the rest of their lives!!!!

Right now, there is a Thai-American sitting in Thai prison for a blog he published while in the US. He was doing translations of that book, from English to Thai, on his blog.

When arrested, he was apparently living here, having medical treatment. I wonder if he did the "Thai thing" and came over on his Thai passport. If he is staying here as a Thai, there is little or nothing the US can do for him.

Neither the US or Thailand "recognize" dual citizenship. It's sort of a "don't ask; don't tell" policy. But, in this case, it will probably matter.
