Default How to have a Safe and Trouble free holiday in Phuket 101.

Steve made a great suggestion on another Thread that was dealing with some negative issues on Phuket.

He said it would be a good idea to start a thread that gave useful information to first time visitors about avoiding tourist traps, scams and cultural fopare's whilst on holiday on what is still to many people, a tropical paradise....The Island of Phuket.

Whilst not an expert by any means, I have been there on several occassions over the last twenty years so I thought I might as well make a start..........

Default Avoid bangla road at night...

Bangla road is the centre of the Patong Bar Scene and Sex trade and if there is likely to be "conflict" anywhere on Phuket, then this is the place.

It can be a facinating area to "people watch" but due to the type of "people" that get drawn to this place and the amount of alchohol that gets plied into these people, it has a tendency to become a little dangerous if you are in the wrong place at the wrong time.

If you find yourself unable to avoid its dubious charms, there are certain things that you should be aware of.

* You are likely to be set apon by scores of touts trying to lead you into establishments that have "shows". The stars of these shows are local lasses that have various talents, most of which involve strange feats performed with their sexual organs.

Be very careful if you are going to enter one these bars, particularly alone, as some of the promises made by these touts of cheap drinks and no cover charges may not always be true and you may find yourself arguing over an unexpected bill as you try to leave.

It is best not to go in at all, but if you do, get specific information from the people on the door about what the price of entry is and what it covers.

* Several bars along Bangla Rd have fabulous looking Transvestites adorned with colorful headresses and feathers standing out the front of them. It is very tempting to have your photo taken with these stunning "ladies", but be aware that this is a source of income for them and refusing to pay for the privledge, even when using your own camera, can offend and turn things nasty. The same applies for guys and girls with eagles, monkeys, iguanas, snakes and other exotic anaimals. The gowing rate for this service can be from 50-250 baht and is generally higher if the rate is not established before taking the photo.

* Many pickpockets and thieves operate in the crowded sois and bars around Bangla, some disguised as cute little children. Be aware of your belongings, dont flash wads of cash around and keep expensive jewellrey in your hotel safe.

Good advice, ShaneK!

To add to that: I try to research airport-hotel transfer costs where possible, but a good place to start is to email your hotel and ask them if they provide a pickup and if so how much it is. It can at least give you a reference point when you come to bargain with someone.

Maybe an area or thread where we can report tuktuk prices for journeys would be a helpful idea. e.g. Airport to Pa Tong = xxx Baht.

If I am staying somewhere extra special e.g. 4 or 5 star resort I will not tell the driver that, but rather give the name of a budget hotel nearby - if there is one!

Regarding pickpockets I keep my wallet/passport in my front pocket of my trousers which have zip pockets. Not going to stop a determined or skilled thief who maybe works by distraction but it's an extra hassle over the simple bulging back pocket swipe.
