Default Krabi to Koh Samui

We are planning our Thailand vacation for next year, (june) and try to decide where to go...Phuket, Krabi, Koh Samui, Hua Hin.... Not easy to choose!!!
The plan is to stay about 7 nights in one place and then move to one of the other.
The easiest route is to fly BKK-Phuket-Koh Samui - BKK, but we would love to have a week in Krabi....
Have anyone tried to rent a taxi going from Krabi to Samui? (or to the ferry dock in Surathani?)
How much will this cost approx? How many hours?
We are a family of 4 - (2 adults and 2 small children)
(A couple of years back we did the route with a tour operator and a bus, this took us 12 hours as we had to change bus 5 times and have to wait for a couple of hours several times - not want to do that again!!!)

You could rent a private car, will be about 3 hours. If you rent a car with driver or taxi, my best guess would be 3,000 Baht?

You can also take the bus, just don't book it through a touroperator, but go the busstation and book it there. The trip will take 4-6 hours (depending on the kind of bus) without any changes, so really quite ok. And that will be a lot cheaper of course.

have just returned from an idyllic fortnight in KS and in the daily paper it said that Bangkok Airlines was starting flights in October 07 direct from KS to Krabi I think twice a week so if I were you I'd check that out on their website. By the way, they've done a lot of work on KS airport since last year and it has not been spoiled in any way - in fact it is now even better! Let us know how you get on.

They used to do them before. It would be good if they started them again.
KS airport altough still quaint is like a metropolis towards when we first went.
