| | Walking from Katathani Hi,
Can anyone tell me if it is an easy walk to Mom Tri's Boathouse from the Katathani Resort as it looks fairly close on the map and I hate relying on Tuk Tuk drivers. Are there any bars with music close to the Katathani ?
Thanks in advance.

| | Jax Thanks Jax,
I don't know where Laura lives but if it's Sydney, she's probably asleep as it's 1.30am. I'll check tomorrow. I hope you have some success in finding somewhere to stay in December and you don't have to pay a really high price. I guess I've become too used to paying off season prices as I usually go in September/ October.
Anyway I'm off to bed and thanks again.
Best Wishes

| | Hi Michelle,
The walk is short but steep. If you are reasonably fit it wont bother you and it's downhill on the way back most importantly.
There are bars across the road from the Kata Thani. I would say thay would have recorded music. There are a few bands at some small bars in Kata but they will be closer to Kata centre, which will require a tuk tuk(100baht).

| | Hi Michelle,
Yes Mom Tris is in walking distance from Katathani. Its up the steep hill which takes you to Kata. Its very easy to walk the hill, we do it every evening to get to Kata. Its even easier to do the hill on the way back, down hill and a little light on feet with beer!!
Its advisable to get reservations for the restaurant as its extremely popular. A day or two before you want to go usually does it.
When are you going to Katathani? we go every year and thought we wouldnt be able to get there this January, however im pleased to say.... we are able to go now and im so excited! 5th time and i still love the hotel. The beach is the best on phuket!
Fire away if you have any questions, im always glad to talk about the hotel and phuket.

| | Laura Hi Laura,
Thanks so much for the answer. We've been to Phuket twice before and have been to Kata but just really to Mom Tris and can't remember a lot about Kata as we stay at the Merlin Beach Hotel in Patong at Tri Trang Beach. We are going on 26th September, first 10 nights at Katathani and 12 nights Merlin. We like the Merlin but we thought that we'd like a change and decided to hedge our bets in case we didn't like the Katathani and book for both. When I first looked at the Katathani on Trip Advisor I saw mostly positive reviews but recently saw a lot of negative ones but some did seem a bit far fetched e.g the grounds of the hotel were very neglected. We met people last year who were staying there and they said the grounds were well kept. We are staying in a junior suite in the Thani wing and we hope to get one with a good ocean view. I read that the balconies are not private, is that right ? At the Merlin you can't see your neighbours unless you stand right at the edge of the balcony or actually stick your head around the dividing wall. Is this the same at the Katathani ? I also read that the lower floor rooms have a bit of a mildew type smell and also that the view is blocked somewhat by trees. I have read about Kata and Kata Central, how far apart are they and what is the difference between the two ? I am pleased to know that we can actually walk somewhere to eat and for entertainment, as I get sick of relying on tuk tuks and paying such ridiculous prices for such short distances. The taxis in Bangkok are so cheap in comparison. Are there any bars or restaurants that you would advise us to try ? I heard of one that is on the beach that is a reggae type place but I don't know if it is within walking distance. Any suggestions for a nice place on the beach to go at sunset for a drink or dinner ? When we were at Mom Tris and sitting looking out to sea there was a place up to the left that looked very popular but we were having such a nice time we couldn't be bothered to walk up and have a look, do you know what it is ? What is the shopping like in Kata in comparison to Patong and could you suggest anywhere for a facial ? Do you go into Patong much when you stay at Kata ? We were planning to take advantage of being in Kata and see things further south whilst there and stay away from Patong until we haved moved to the Merlin. So many questions and I'm sure I'll think of more, you may regret your offer !!
Best Wishes

| | Dont worry Michelle, you will love it and not want to leave.
There is a great little casual restaraunt called Kata Mama Seafood that is on the headland between Kata Noi (where you are ) and Kata Beach that I love. It is very cheap with great views and the Reggae style place is next door. Right next to KataMamas is a nice little cheap Day spa that does facails for abour 600 baht and has great massage as well.

| | Morning Michelle,
I have just read your message and can happily reply to your questions, If you look out to sea at mom tris and then look left, the only place thats there will be the katathani hotel that you see.
The regae bar is at the back of the katathani, high up on the hills. You can get a tuk tuk here, its only 2 mins away. Be careful here tho cos mark had his wallet stolen here by thai rastas and they do charge you what ever they like. They didnt have prices on the day menus.
The balaconies at the hotel are how you described the merlin. Private untill you stand right out at the edge then you can look to your neighbours. The grounds are extremely well kept. Perhaps the person who said they wernt were there after the tsunami when the sea salt destroyed the greenery.
The rooms we have stayed in were always on the second floor and we never had a musty smell. However my sister stayed in a corner room at the Bhuri wing were they were pretty much in the shade and they said they could smell a small trace of must, probably cos their room was shaded a lot. This shouldnt be a case for the thani rooms as they are all well open.
you will love it here.
have to rush, im going to my 12 hour shift now, so i will check in after work and if you have any more q's i will be glad to help if i can.
ps, we are going late february.
