Smile First tiMe to Thailand

Hello!
Is it better to book ur Hotels before you going instead of going their then finding them! so can enjoy the holiday! And is it better to book trips/tours and transport in advance? Cause alot of ppl said to not book in advance to just go their but their is alot of hassle and stress involved in that!

Depends! For Christmas and New Years Holidays many hotels are fully booked or almost full and prices are higher. Later on in the year, especially May through early October, there are more vacancies available. Off season hotels often have discounts. Arriving around Christmas definitely book.

I think it would be more stressful walking the streets, late at night looking for a place to stay, in a strange city carrying everything you own with you! Arrival during the day hours, off season, less stressful but you still have to know what area to head for first! (Visit a library and check out a few travel guides, there are guides for cheap backpackers and those for more wealthy tourists - choose the one that applies to you!)

If you are new to Thailand, arriving late at night, maybe booking at least the first night is a good idea. This way you will have a definite address for the taxi or bus to head for. Then you can wander around the next morning looking for that "ideal" place to stay for the rest of your time in Bangkok. You can use the same hotel again the night before you fly out. Some hotels will store stuff for you anticipating you booking another night with them.

Where you stay in Bangkok may depend on if you are really young - maybe Khao San Road area. Into shopping mostly - maybe the Pratunam area. Want to use the Skytrain to get around the city and be close to restaurants, malls, street vendors and nightlife - Siam or Sukhumvit Road area. Even males and females may have different ideas of where to stay or what to choose for a hotel.

When you get around to asking for hotel advice also mention how much you want to pay for the room each night. You can deal directly with the hotel or hostel if you want. Or, you can call from the airport and ask about holding a room for you. At least you will have a definite address to head for.

Wait until you get to Thailand to sign up for a tour. You can get a tour through local travel agencies in most cities popular with tourists. There are many travel agencies in Bangkok, Pattaya, Chiang Mai and Phuket. They will have a book of popular tourist destinations, choose one or two, pay and the tour company picks you up at your hotel. Find one one day leave the next morning. Sometimes same day for evening tours. Some hotel also have a tour desk where you can sign up for the same tours you get from a travel agency. Some hotels may charge more for tours than travel agencies.

Good luck.

Depends when you are goind and what type of places you are looking for. If you are going during high season and want to stay at nicer places, book in advance. If you are just backpacking, than just show up.

Also depends on how much time you have. If you have a long time and you think that your plans might change(stay longer or shorter in some places) than don't book in advance.

If you know exactly where you want to go and for how long, than go ahead and book so you don't have to worry about it when you get there.

Hope this helps to answer your questions.

ps. a tripadvisor app is always good to have.

It is always in your favor if you book everything including accommodation, tours/trips, transportation and car rental etc. in advance. This will avoid last minute hassles and you can find best travel deals as well. You should do a thorough research on the internet and compare the rates and services of various online suppliers and pick the suitable one that matches your budget. For peak travel season it is highly recommended to do all the bookings well in advance as you may not be able to find a suitable accommodation or transportation matching your budget otherwise.

For the overnight sleeper train to Chiang Mai get your train tickets the first day you arrive. Sleeper cars go faster than regular seats. If your hotel is on the Skytrain you can use the Skytrain to connect with the subway, the subway goes to the Hualamphong train station.

At $100 a night you don't sound like backpackers. A base hotel room with air, private toilet, shower and TV starts around 600 baht ($20) which means you could have separate rooms in cheaper hotels if you want. So where do you want to stay in Bangkok? Are you a couple guys out to check out the nightlife or are you more interested in shopping?

On 8 Hotel is right at a Skytrain stop. Easy walk to restaurants, malls, street vendors, nightlife, travel agents for tours and even supermarkets for snacks and other essentials. Also in this same area but a little further back from the Skytrain is the Le Fenix Hotel.

If you are more interested in shopping you can check out the Baiyoke Boutique Hotel in the Pratunam area. Close to the Ratchaprorop Rail Link stop connecting you with the train that leaves the airport. Florida Hotel is also on both a Skytrain stop and the Phaya Thai Rail Link. No real nightlife in this area but lots of Pratunam shopping.

If you purchase your tours in Thailand they will be cheaper than buying them out of the country ahead of time. Travel agencies in Thailand know you need tours right away and can have you on a tour in one day. Sometimes leave on a dinner cruise the same night. This way you have more flexibility.

Millions of tourists arrive with maybe only the first few nights in a hotel booked and manage to do okay. Up to you. Try to spend the last night in Bangkok because this will allow you to do some final shopping, do another tour or take in a dinner cruise. Then you will only have a short taxi ride to the airport instead of flying in at the last minute. You can book flights while in Thailand for Phuket if you want.

Good luck.

My hotel recommendation for you:

Bangkok: Citrus Hotel on Sukhumvit 22. Great modern rooms and great value for money.

Legacy Express is also good and fantastic location.

Chiang Mai:

1. Aruntara Hotel is great but a little bit outside of center
2. Tamirand Village right in the middle of old town but a bit pricey
3. MD House if you want a budget option that is the best!

Also, what are your plans in Chiang Mai for 7 days? You might want to consider going up to Pai or another place for a few nights?

Phuket: please don't stay in Phuket for 14 days :) there are so many other(better) islands out there

but...in Phuket it depends what you want. You did not mention how old you and your friend are and whether you would be looking for somethign quiet or places close to nightlife etc. that would be very helpful to know.

I would suggest spending some time on Koh Lanta as well and maybe going down to some smaller islands like Koh Ngai and Koh Laoliang and Koh Lipe.

Hope this helps and if you give us more info about your trip, I'm sure we can give you better advice.

Cool Thanks again

Thank you all again for the helpful information!
Well the things what we like to do in chang Mai is a city tour, go ride on elephants, go see some of the sights, like to do a zipline tour over the rainforest! We are both in your 20s and female we like a abit of both quick and nightlife so get all of Thailand! We don't tend to stay at phuket for 14 days but in in the south! We like to go to some of the islands around! We still in the planing stage and getting some quotes!

What would you suggest a first timer to Thailand to do for 3-4 weeks?
