Hi, thanks for your post. This thread from the archives explains the taxi procedure at Bangkok Airport nicely - look for ShaneK's post: Late arrival in Bangkok

However, if you're arriving during "normal" hours (i.e. not really late or really early), consider taking the all-new Airport Express link. Koonel recently posted an excellent summary of the details; I'll try to dig the thread out for you.

Here's the link for the new Bangkok Airport Express Train link from one of Koonel's threads: Airport Rail Link

The train links Suvarnabhuni Airport to Phaya Thai BTS station.

What time are you arriving? Airport Express bus and the new Rail Link stop running at midnight. Some hotels near the new Rail Link you can walk to. The Rail Link stops in the Pratunam area. From the Pratunam stops you can also use a meter taxi to complete the ride to your hotel. From Makkasan or Phaya Thai a meter taxi to the Sukhumvit Road or Siam area will be around 70 baht or less. You can even connect with the Skytrain at the Phaya Thai stop.
UrbanRail.Net > Asia > Thailand > Bangkok Metro

If you arrive after midnight you must use a meter taxi. The taxi desk is located on the first floor in two spots out at the curb. Look for the Public Taxi desks. Have a good address for the hotel not just a name. The taxi worker will write your hotel down and another employee will tell the driver where to go in Thai. Most of the fares come to around 350 baht give or take a few baht. The meter starts at 35 baht. You pay the meter fare at the hotel along with a 50 baht surcharge. During the ride you also are responsible for 1 or 2 toll charges coming to around a total of 70 baht. All together 350 baht is about normal for most places in Bangkok.

Bangkok Airport Public Taxi Service | Suvarnabhumi Airport | New Bangkok Airport Guide

The fare of a meter taxi in Bangkok is for everyone in the taxi and not per person. Remember to have some small bills or even change to pay the driver. Taxi drivers often say they do not have change for a 500 baht note hoping you will say keep the change! No surcharge for taxi rides back to the airport.

Good luck.

The taxi driver already gets compensated 50 baht for picking up at the airport. I usually just round off the fare to get rid of some coins, maybe 20 baht if I am in a generous mood and the guy wasn't asking for more money on the way. I tip what the Thais tip - not much at all! A 20 baht tip goes a long way in many situations in Bangkok!
