Default Food court review- mbk

I noticed Emdee missed the opportunity to do a review of the food court on the 6th floor at the MBK shopping centre on his last trip as he could not find a seat in the place so I thought I would help out by giving my views on this eating place.

The food court is located on the sixth floor of the centre and easy to find. Food purchase is by coupon and you can purchase the coupons at a number of selling booths conveniently located in the food court- if you don't use all your coupons take them back to the booths which indicate "coupon refund". The coupon can only be used and refunded on the day it was issued- it is worthless after this.

The lipstick lover and I ate at the food court only yesterday so the memories of a delicious meal are still fresh in my mind.

I purchased 300 baht of coupons and after securing a table (and there were plenty of places available at 1pm) I wandered around to see what was on offer. There must be 40 or 50 of various little mini kitchens operating here and most were doing a steady trade although the locals seemed to have their favourities with some queing at the more popular ones.

The lipstick lover quickly settled on a Hong Kong style roasted duck with brown sauce and steamed vegetables from kitchen C19 which specialises in chinese style cooking. The offering was generous and I estimated there must have been close to a half duck in the serving. It was perfectly cooked, moist and full of flavour. I'm uncertain about the ingredients of the brown sauce but it was quite pleasant to eat.The vegetable offered was chinese brocolli and it was stir fried perfectly and fresh and crunchy. The cost of this dish was 150 baht and I gave it 8/10. A smaller serving is available with a noodle soup for 60 baht and we tried this the day before- it also was
good value although it only had a few slices of duck, relying more on the noodles and vegetables to bulk the dish up.

Kitchen C8 specialises in vegetarian thai food and the pungent smell of an aromatic curry was in the air as I passed by and then turned around to see what it was. Heaped high on a big serving dish was a green curry full of glass noodles, thai green egg plants, snake beans, mushrooms and slices of red chillis and other greens. I asked for a plate of this and also some morning glory, stir fried with garlic and chilli. This came on a plate with the fluffiest rice I have seen for ages- why can't I get my rice to turn out like this?. This large serving was 45 baht and what a bargain it was, Nice and spicy, not overpowering nor disguising the other flavours that came through with every mouthful. This was truly an amazing piece of cooking for a food court in my opinion. I thought 10/10 for this one and what value for the price.

One of the other stalls specialises in fruit juices and we had two mango passion smoothies. These were great and comprised of a few slices of mango, some pineapple pieces, a dash of passionfruit syrup and some ice and yogurt plus around 1/4 cup of sugar syrup. A quick blast in the food blender produced a thirst quenching drink. 8/10 and at 65 baht good value for the fresh ingredients used.

For the hungry little piggies mango and sticky rice is available for either 80 baht or 100 baht for a large serve. We didn't try it as we were more than satisfied withour main dishes. However it did look enticing.

Knowing Emdee's liking for hoy tod I noted kitchen C15 was offering fried oyster omlette in a large hot pan for 120 baht or fried oysters in a large hot pan for 75 baht- Perhaps next time for these I thought.

The food court offers a tremendous range of food at excellent prices and it really is a taste of Thailand and its clean. I can't wait to get there again.

Roving Rabbit...Great report.

You have to try the Mango and sticky rice. I always manage to leave enough room to share a plate of this with Kerry. It is absolutely delictable. The same stall serves various multi-colored deserts with coconut milk, shaved ice and what I think are beans of some sort. It is a great way to put out the fire in your mouth and belly after over doing the chili.

I like the coupon system. I am glad that they havn't replaced them with cards like at other Bangkok Food Courts. Speaking of which, try The Loft on the top floor of Central Chitlom. A bit more expensive and "swanky" but worth a try.

Nice review.

Another food court that many travelers could visit is at the airport. The Magic Food Court is located on the first floor near where the Airport Express Bus kiosk is located.

Airport Express to Bangkok Hotels | Suvarnabhumi Airport | New Bangkok Airport Guide

Not as elaborate as MBK but probably the cheapest place to eat at at the airport! Open 24 hours. By-the-way the new Airport Rail Link is a level or two below this first floor. This little food court also has the same one day coupons.

Happy eating.

Hi Roving Rabbit,

A very nice report. In fact the Shopper Girl and me did eat on the 6th floor several times during our two months in Thailand. It was just one one rare occasion on a Friday lunchtime that I lost the little patience that I have and descended to the Fifth Avenue Food Court.

I know the food stall you bought the Hong Kong duck dish from. It is right in the middle of the food court. And yes, its ducks look delicious.

You guessed it correctly RR, C15 is my favourite stall on the 6th floor. She knows me by sight because as soon as I approach the stall she starts preparing two 75 baht oyster omelettes.

At the Hong Kong food stall, they also have one of the yummiest wonton soups around, only costs 45 baht. I had two bowls there last time, it was tremendous value.

I hope you and the Lipstick Lover are having a great time in Bangers.

The next time you are in food court, have a look at I think it is C1 and tell me if you can figure out what is in that huge cauldron. The signage says Asian herbs soup, but it looks like warm tar to me.
