You can go with a organized tour that handles everything or do everything yourself
after you get to Thailand. Once you decide on your hotel in Bangkok then all you have to do is find one of the many hundreds of local travel agencies and choose a popular tour.
You can choose a tour one day and leave the following morning. Sometimes choose a tour in the morning and leave that same night. Local Thai travel agencies are used to quick turnarounds. Some hotel desks can also provide the same tours. These are more often shared tours with other tourists. Tour company picks you up at your hotel and returns you there at the end of the trip. You can also arrange private tours too at a higher price. Travel agencies have a menu selection of popular places to visit.
When you choose the tours you want when you want you have more flexibility. Something better may come up after you get to Thailand and you may want to alter your schedule to go to places that the fully organized tour has not planned for. Or not go anywhere and hang around with friends you just met in Thailand.
You should read up on Thailand using local travel forums and travel guides. Lonely Planet TG has information you can use for cheaper visits. Frommers and Fodors often has more readers who want more things planned for them. For hotel recommendations always mention a price range for your hotel choices.
A fully organized tour does the thinking for you. They may cost more than doing the tour arrangements yourself. It is up to you. If you are used to arranging your own flights yourself and your own hotels already, doing it for Thailand will not be that much different. If you haven't got your passport yet don't wait until the last minute to do so. Check the visa requirements for Thailand for your country. Many tourists from the US, UK, Europe, Canada, etc. can enter and get a 30 day stamp in their passports at the airport. See what is required for your country.
Have a nice holiday.
