A good possibility that around a half million tourists will show up in June next year. High season, especially Christmas and New Years holidays, expect over a million tourists a month.
You will not be alone! Some tourists prefer that time of year when hotels are cheaper. A little rain or a little more heat depending on where you are but nothing a healthy young person like you can't handle. There will be days of beautiful weather and other days where you may have lots of overcast or even rain depending on location and if it is the end of June.
Thailand weather and climate
First figure out where you want to stay in Bangkok. Young people often choose Khao San Road area but there is also good cheap accommodation in the Sukhumvit Road area too. In the Sukhumvit Road area you can also use the Skytrain.
You have time to figure out how to get from the airport to the city. Spend a few days at least in Bangkok before flying or taking a train or bus to elsewhere. You can make your arrangements for transportation when in Bangkok. If you want to immediately fly out to another area make sure you have sufficient time between flights.
Read up on Thailand before you leave home. Lonely Planet Travel Guide is one source. You can probably find others at your local library.
You have plenty of time to figure things out. Backpacking sounds "sexy" but most of the time when you hump a pack it will only be from airport to taxi or bus and then from there to your hotel. Actually carrying a big heavy pack a long distance walking through hills and jungles just doesn't happen that often. Sorry to burst any bubble!
Travel agencies in Thailand provide tours. There are lots of travel agencies in Thailand especially in cities like Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Pattaya and Phuket. Find a tour one day and leave the following morning. Or use public transportation. Don't be surprised if you encounter 2 tier pricing. A Thai or even a tour company gets in for a low Thai citizen price and a visiting Farang (foreigner) pays a much higher price. Sometimes just taking the tour is almost as cheap as finding your own transportation.
Figure out how to handle your cash and other finances. You can use debit and credit cards in Thailand as well as cash travelers checks pretty easy. Anytime you use a credit card or debit card overseas you have to first notify the card issuer or the withdrawal may not be allowed. Review your visa requirements ahead of time and make sure your passport is good for at least 6 months when you leave for home.
Good luck.
