Default Dining on the Safe Side!

Been some debate about the safety of dining on the streets versus dining at established eateries. I'd like to share my recent experience....

As you may know, I love street vendor chow. But Friday, I was stuck, downtown, doing a mall crawl with the little Mrs.. Therefore, all my dining was restricted to nice, clean, indoor establishments.

Everything was tasty and I felt fine, until later that afternoon. About 6 pm, the DQ cone I had for dessert seemed to be repeating. A while later, I started getting minor stomach "cramps". This later lead to some "gas".

By 11 pm, I found myself on the porcelain throne, with a plastic pail on my lap. For about 2 hours, my body tried to expel its entire contents through every opening. I'm not sure if I wasn't blowing stuff out my ears !!!! I have never been so violently ill before.

From my best barf bag forensics, my guess is that whatever it was it came from one of Bangkok's more famous, well respected, Japanese chain restaurants. I doubt I will ever be able to eat katsudon again!

Looks like I'm going to be sticking to my trusted street carts ....

Curt,

Did you have sashimi or any uncooked fish/seafood?

Nope, never touch the stuff in Thailand.

Had katsudon, a pork cutlet, with shrooms, veggies and sauce, over rice, held together with a scrambled egg. I also always stress I want the egg well cooked (much more than in the pic below).

My guess Curt,

The culprit is the rice, particularly if it had been reheated or had been left uncovered in the fridge overnight. Probably reheated, which is a big, big, big no no in any kitchen. More food poisoning occurs with rice than any other ingredient, except uncooked/undercooked/or seafood harvested from polluted waters.

I hope the tummy is OK now!

That's my guess also. We hit during off hours, around 3pm. Odds are that they just threw the new stuff over old, curing rice.
