Exclamation Time it would take to change planes? !!

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum and am planning on taking a holiday to Thailand. I've never been there before so I would like your help.

I'm planning on traveling from Vancouver (Canada) to Hong Kong using a cathay pacific airline.

If my place arrives in Hong Kong at approx. 07:50pm and there's a plane with AirAsia airline that departs from Hong Kong to fly to Phuket at approx 9:10 PM. would this hour be enough time to get off the first plane then onto the next?

The reason I am asking this is because the next plane would be next day.

Would it be best to take the next day plane? Or would an hour be sufficient enough time to change planes?

Thanks,

Yazeed

I think that is tight on time as it isn't when the flight leaves but when the gate closes. It will also depend on whether you can check your luggage strainght through to Phuket or if you have to collect it and check it back in.

Personally I wouldn't risk it!

It is tight, and impossible if you have any kind of delay on your first flight or you have to clear immigration after the first flight.

I would not risk it.

You want to aim for 2-hour stopovers on international flights, just in case of delays or border troubles. YVR in Vancouver is generally quite brisk, but the Canadian border service employees are known around the world (and among Canadians) for being humorless and unkind, so you never know if they will cause you trouble. I wouldn't risk it, personally.

I don't think you will have enough time between flights. Many full service airlines won't transfer bags to discounters.

If you haven't booked your flights yet wouldn't you have more choices if you flew to Bangkok instead of Phuket? I remember using Emirates years ago from Hong Kong, they were fairly cheap and the flight was later in the night. They are a full service airline. Keep in mind when you use a discounter they also have some lower weight allowances for baggage. When you are overweight with them you pay extra. I know that China Air and Cathay also fly to Thailand and are full service. Sometimes going for the cheapest ride ends up costing more than you figured on.

If you intend to fly to Asia often from Canada you might want to consider using a the same airline company all the way to Thailand. From Canada to Asia is a lot of frequent flier miles for a round trip flight on the same airline. If you already have a frequent flier "elite status" on other airlines you may be able to add more miles to it and get bonus miles. Also with "elite status" you also have more free seat choices, early on, larger weight allowances for baggage.

Sometimes the cheap comes expensive!

Up to you.

I think I'm finally waking up to this fact :D

Whilst I still aim to get the cheapest flights possible, I'm now willing to pay a little bit more for more friendly flight times. I just booked a trip back from Milan to the UK and stumped up only 10 euros extra to fly in the afternoon instead of 6am in the morning. At the end of the day, what value do you put on having a good night's sleep? Certainly more than 10 euros in my case

When you have an afternoon flight you don't have to get up around 0300 for the 0600 departure! You can sleep in too and have time for your free breakfast since you are paid up to noon anyway!
