I was also wondering what your opinions are on which of the islands are the best to visit? Currently we're looking at Phuket and Ko Samui.

The legal drinking age in Thailand is 20. It may or not be enforced but when you are underage and get caught doing something stupid by the police you will wish you had not been drinking!
If you are going to a Full Moon Party at Koh Phangan stay away from the dope! Sometimes the police sell the dope and sometimes the dope sellers rat you out to the police. Getting caught with dope in Thailand is not like getting caught with dope in a Western country.
Phuket can be a little overpriced but for the first time you may like it for a while. Try to see some other places in Thailand besides a beach. Even in Chiang Mai you can get a tan, same for Bangkok.
Google check will give you lots of info on Thailand's islands. Google up the "how to get from __?__and to__?__" because for some places like Koh Phangan, you have to jump through some hoops. Don't be falling down drunk on boats late at night.
If you are flying into Bangkok it might be better to spend a few days there at first instead of flying out immediately for Phuket. No cheap places to sleep at at the airport. Watch your connection times if you land at Bangkok and intend to immediately fly out. If you do have a connecting flight check to see if your baggage will be transferred to a different flight or not. Allow for baggage retrieval if needed.
Lots of things you have to work on like transportation from airports to hotels. Wait until you get to Thailand to change any currency over to Thai baht for the best rate. Bring newer currency, no crappy dirty bills, not old bills. Stick to the large amounts. Banks can be picky when changing currency. If you intend to use an ATM you first have to tell your bank that you will be overseas. The fee in Thailand to use an ATM is 150 baht per transaction so take out the maximum. Use cash for cheap purchases in restaurants and from street vendors. Have small bills available for paying taxi cabs and other purchases. Sometimes the drivers or even some small stores may not have change for large bills.
If you are young and around other young people who are doing dope be very careful that those dopers do not put their dope in your bags! Check your bags thoroughly before you go through immigration, tourists who get caught with dope, even if they were set up by a friend, spend a long time in prison eating fish heads and rice!
Good luck.
