I have been there 3 times when unrest and during the tsunami and never had a problem apart from the airport closure and having to drive to phuket from BKK instead od flying - cant speak for the moment but I would not let anything prevent me from travelling

We had heard a lot of horror stories about Thailand which made us very tense but in reality we found that by observing the general safety rules one can safely travel in Thailand. Shanek's advice to avoid unsolicitated helps & suggestions by locals did help us.

Be cautious, be aware, but understand that it is a different culture and protests in Thailand may not be the same as protests in Johannesburg (vice verse).

Contact your state department once you arrive; get on traveler alert email messaging systems, ex-pat newspapers in Thailand etc.

A rule of thumb that works for me is that if those already in country aren't leaving in droves then a good deal of any apprehension can be tied to media hype and misinformation.

August is far out...might want to check back in periodically!

We're in Bangkok in June and not worried unless our Foreign Office say you shouldn't travel.

It's a big city and they need tourism. Just take care as you would in your own country.

I always reckon that Hereford is one of the safest places to live as no matter who wants to take them on, you really don't want to upset the SAS in their home city!!

There is no way to predict what the situation will be, 5 months down the road. Thailand could wind up under military rule again. Although a military government ruins a country's international viability, it sure seems to keep things peaceful!

I live on the eastern seaboard of Thailand Rayong province. This red shirt thing has nothing to do with foreigners. I'm an aussie by the way. I lived in Bankok when the last coup was on and again it was a thai to thai thing thats all. 35 odd countries have issued travel warnins to their nationals which i dont agree with unless yr talking south thailand where there are killings weekly near the malay border.
Anyway all in all thailand is no different from any country and all travellers must use common sense when travelling but to cancel a trip based the current situation i think is ludicrous. The travellers that have been here a few times over the years already know that u can still have an enjoyable time in thailand

Come stay with us if you like. We are directly across from Koh Samet Island

Brgds mark
