I really like to travel to Thailand in May. I know that there is a chance of rain and that it is more humid but this is counter balances by it being quieter and there being so many good deals around.
It would depend of course where you are thinking of going because some of the places are more difficult to get to during this down season.
Once you get to July and August it is main holiday season and the prices go up and there are lots of kids around. although you may be travelling with kids?
Christmas and New Year are the same except a lot more expensive.
Jan, Feb and March has good weather also April, but watch in April for songkran as this can be a hard time to be travelling around.
In short any time really dependant on where you are going and what you want to do.

I'll be in country around November. First time during that time frame. I'll let you know how it is after I get back :)

I do know that the rainy season it's the most hospitable, especially for those looking for an idyllic beach vacation.

Originally i was looking at going around August time but i believe that is right in the middle of rainy season. So probably May, June, July,

Ive not done a lot of research and plan to keep it that way as i want it to be a pretty spontaneous trip. But Bangkok, Chaing Mai, Phuket and Ko Samui i hear are the best places to go.

My Criteria is:
Culture
Beaches and relaxation (a hut on a beach)
Partying

July and August are a great time to go to Koh Samui but not ideal for Phuket as the 2 areas have different, very distinct monsoon seasons.

For the overall spread of what you want, I would really only bother with 1 beach area and include some time in Chang Mai and Bangkok for a cultural fix.

Beach huts are getting harder to find on beaches that are closer to infrastructure and a good range of nightlife but there are still some available on Samui, particularly on Lamai beach, which would be my recommendation based on your criteria. There is a very nice casual atmosphere there and even though the nightlife is not as frenetic as Chaweng, I would see it as adequate.

If you decide to wait until November, then the weather turns around and you have a better chance of having dry weather on the Andaman Sea side which takes in Phuket, Krabi and Phi-Phi. Beach Huts are rare on Phuket but they can still be found on Phi-Phi at some of the less developed beaches. These areas have less nightlife than the central Tonsai beach but a short boat trip will get you to all the action.

There are very different weather systems in different parts of Thailand.
if you are planning to go to Chaing mai be aware that sometimes in May there is a problem with the air quality this is due to the burning of crops.
The worst weather we ever encountered was on Samui late November and December.

We went to Thailand last year for the entire month of February. The weather was perfect. Clear blue skies the whole time. Bangkok was hot and humid at 34 degrees (but we only stayed a couple of days so it was manageable). Chiang Mai was great - temp around 27 degrees (and less humidity). Phuket/Ko Phi Phi/Ko Lanta were all around 30 degrees - fabulous beach weather.

never a wrong time to go to Thailand have been in almost every month of the year including over xmas and new year - plus songkran - kings birthday etc etc - but for what you are looking May sounds about right or possibly Oct / Nov rather than koh samui I would stick with phuket with hire car and drive round to krabi for a couple of days - also do BKK and chaing mai - or a good substitute could be around river kwai - where there is lots of cuture - sites - waterfalls - tiger temple etc and is reachable both by rail and car from BKK quite easily
