Default A side-trip to the Philippines, worth it.

A friend of mine is going to marry a girl from there. i am in Thailand at that moment, and will probably spend a day of 5.

I don't know anything about the country. What can I do, when I get there, what to visit, where to go, beaches, sightseeing, don't have a clue.

Is it safe, what about the food, best site to book transport Bkk-Manilla-Bkk.

I really don't know what I am up to...

YES ITS WORTH A TRIP.

THE FOODS NOT GREAT.

the people speak better english than their thai neighbours, although the country is a lot more poverty stricken.

if your looking for beautiful places with nice beaches the maybe head to palawan or boracay or even some of the places/islands just north of cebu.

if you just after girls then heads to manila or angeles city,or even puerto galera/sabang,although here its not so in your face as you got beaces to go to and things to do other than pick up girls.

have good time.

btw dont go in september,it rained everyday all day for 7 days solid

wopuld love to go back to the philippines and see it all properly one day.

Is there no one that can know a nice hotel, preference by a nice beach in Cebu?

Very difficult to make an opinion. I also can take hotel one night, not far away from the airport, and go to a nearby island if that is nicer?

Thumbs up

I've only been to Boracay and Manila. I enjoyed Boracay - beautiful beach, although it's quite developed - but I preferred the vibe of Thailand.

Chris over at nomad4ever recently spent 6 months in the Phils and wrote up an excellent report about the Good, Bad and Ugly of the place in his opinion - you can read it here. He's an experienced traveller who has lived in many South East Asian countries long term, so you can trust his view

Well I will visit the country. But not as planned.
Changing my ticket had decreased 20 % in one day. I thought it was because of the week-end : wrong! 40 % after the week-end. That would mean, 250 € for the change and 300 € for the flight to Cebu!

550 € /person more!
Just for 5 days the extra is to steep.

Default food and places

oooooohhhh the food is not really bad!....well if your a vegetarian because the filipinos are meat lovers! and also try their foods it's really great they have mixed tastes like bicol, in bicol their foods are spicy (try bicol express a fast food if you like spicy foods)but i dont live in bicol and i hate spicy food, other filipinos specially those that have some cash (rich people concerned on their belly) eat vegetables. But when you have go to try this foods
1.sapin-sapin
a common filipino treat
2.adobo
a very common and foreigners give a very possitive reaction about this filipino dish ussually served with rice(choose your meat like adobong manok(chicken) or adobong baboy(pig)and many more)
3.puto
also a common Filipino food (snack) i love it especially when served with cheese on top
4.puto bumbong
common filipino food or treat(very yummy)
5.lechon baboy
if you like meat and wanted roasted pig go to cebu and buy there they make very good food
6.basuy
...common but not in cities go to provinces i recommend southern leyte (ive been there but dont live there) actually provinces sell very good and cheap food especially native chicken they dont use feeds they use tahop (organic material from rice, the outer covering when removed by grinding machine becomes tahop.
7.sinigang
very common and filipinos love this and so do I you can also choose your meat common are the sinigang baboy(pork) or sinigang na manok(chicken)and more
8.palitaw
a filipino snack common and cheap
9.bico
Filipino food very good it's a snack
10.kutsinta
very common and very good they usually serve it with shredded mature coconut
11.dont know what it's called sugar coated peanut????
for peanut lovers you can see peanut vendors anywhere at busy locations
12.toron
so common a snack and delicious comes from banana
and many more

CAUTION:NONE OF THOSE ARE SPICY AND MOST OF THOSE FOOD ARE NATIONWIDE SERVED SO IT'S COMMON AND MOST OF THEM ARE MY FAVORITES
actually i'm a filipino and there are many different place whit different prices like for medicines if you buy at mercury drug you will get a bill and once you look at it you will see your expense (don't look very expensive)but there are many drugstore that serve cheaper
and for tourist spots
try
cebu
secondary city
well known for food and also you don't need to hail jeeps or taxis they stop at you when you stand at a corner many of them will, and bonus is the beautiful sceneries so exotic

manila
hmmmmm the capital of ph so crowded if you love nature get out of manila, but there is a certain spot where you can see the sunset so clearly i forgot what name it was.

bohol
beautiful sceneries especially chocolate hills and near chocolate hills the tarsier so cute! and many tourist buy some fly or whatso ever it is in a stick then give it to the tarsier and you can also touch it so fury and cute and soft.also go to the cave (forgot the name)you can take a bath inside the natural lake in the cave, and also the church antiques are in there it's the oldest church in the ph from spanish period

boracay
i's a nice beach but so over crowded

palawan
i recommend this, this is an undisturbed location so beatiful you can go to the underground river to ther beaches and many more ( i went cliff jumping)

bagio
the summer capital at mid day it's hot but when it's comes to morning and night it's cold....but this year it have been so cold said many farmers

and many more the philippines is naturally gifted and if you ask any people what race do they come from you will ussually hear
"im 1/4 or 1/2 chinese or american spanish korean or whatsoever"
it's pretty common because the philippines was a colony of many countries and ws usually fought over by big developed countries like spain japan america and many more (the chinese helped defend ph a little because they lived on ph to)because of the countries natural resources so it's pretty common.
and filipinos secondary language is english but filipinos love to study other language so dont be surprised if they understand chinese korean or japanese and also filipinos are very talkative and will most likely to bring a friend home offer food and let them sleep dont worry it isnt a scam ..well be careful of some and filipinos are hardworking so many filipinos are abroad so no question when asking things like wheres your mom?your sister?or other things
how to use a jeepney
jeeps have names on their body so if your going to sm you will most likely see them in the jeeps body (painted)
