If you're flying on a direct flight from Sydney to Phuket then you have no worries... just buy your duty free at Sydney.
Lucky you getting a direct flight

Hi Geri is right you have no worries if you fly to direct,have a great time we were in Patong a couple of weeks ago and it was quiet ,lots of good value shopping.Joy.
