Heard mixed reports about visiting at this time of year due to bad weather etc.

Question

Nathan,

Thanks for your post. I think it hasn't attracted any responses because it's quite an open question. We don't know anything about you or what you like, so how can we suggest places for you to visit? Are you an island person? Culture vulture? Activity freak? Shopaholic? Country boy? Conveyor belt tourist? Beach bum? Scuba dooba doo type?

Give us a few hints on what you'd find interesting and we'll fire a few recommendations back. Thailand is fine in any weather IMHO!

I'd echo Steve's comment and ask for more info :)

Good news is that it is the "low" season. Tourist haunts aren't as crowded and rates are down.

Bad news is that it can be quite hot and humid.

we have been loads of times in may . It can be humid but we have had excellent weather as well.
There are lots of bargains to be had in accommodation at this time.

Monsoon season is August to November. You should be fine in May, it'll be hot and humid. More or less the same as every other non-monsoon month

May is my personal favorite time to be there, as Durian and Mangosteen (my favorite fruits) are in season, and food and services are cheap. The weather is good, and it's been a while since the last rains so the scuba diving is generally pretty good. There aren't too many tourists puking everywhere and bringing in working girls who harass you every second step you take.

My advice is to not stay in one place for more than a few days. Get around the country, see the various things there are to see and do the many things that the country has to offer.

My advice would be stay away from Phuket, Bangkok and Samui; those places are tourist traps, you'll pay high prices for everything and you won't get good service. Go to the outer places. I'd suggest Chiang Mai if you want to get up north to the mountains. If you're after beaches, I'd recommend Ao Nang in Krabi province. It's like a mini-Phuket, and in May it's lazy and quiet and you'll have this small but modern town all to yourself.

Ao Nang has an enormous range of things to do from lying on the pool or beach side, to rock climbing, white water rafting, kayaking and many others. This place has my vote for where to go, if you're asking for an opinion

Mr Naz.

Thanks, we already pencilled in AO Nang as part of our trip! I'm gonna do a bit of research about Chiang Mai. My friend wants to visit one of the Island's, if you don't recomend Koh Samui, where do you recommend as an Island?!

I think May is just fine. You will save money and have less tourists around. I'd recommend a round trip. Start in Bangkok (also see the old capital), then check out Kanchanaburi and move to the South (I prefer the West coast). The northern parts offer some great landscapes, you should not miss Chiang Mai.

Koh Chang or Koh Tao. Both are a pile cheaper than Koh Samui, and far less touristified. Koh Phi Phi is also pretty good, but the tourists are in the process of terraforming it and I hear its lost its natural charm from what it used to be.

Koh Lanta is also worth a look, I have a few photos from there at the bottom of this album:

It really strange as they say "one man's meat is another man's poison". I have stayed at Aonong a couple of times and would not go back but I would recommend Samui.
But then Mr Naz says that durian is one of his favorite fruits.......yuk. LOL
If you are very much in to rock climbing etc then Aonong would be good for you. You would be better to add some more detail about what your expectations of the holiday are and then people can get a better idea about what would suit you.
Not having a go at you Mr Naz by the way it just is always interesting to see the differences.
