Default Baan Rabiang Nam; Map, Tips and Directions

I thought I would post some help on finding some of the best Thai eats I have found while living in Bangkok. Baan Rabiang Nam has yet to disappoint me. This is the home of the killer "gaengson cha oam" I posted on a previous thread.

Going for dinner, from downtown Bangkok, can be a bit problematic. Getting there isn't too bad, but finding a taxi willing to head back downtown can be a hassle.

Besides that, dinner is always packed. Even with reservations, if you arrive after 5, you will have a wait. Without reservations, the wait will seem endless!

Lunch is the perfect time to go. The crowds are gone, the food is discounted and getting there is quite doable. Dress is quite casual.

To get there, hop on the express boat, heading north. We always use the orange boats. They stop at most piers and run 13 baht to anywhere. You will take it to Pier N30, Nonthaburi.

From here, flag a taxi or, if your bargaining skills are amazing, a tuk tuk, to Baan Rabiang Nam, next to "Wat Khae Nok". They are on "Nonthaburi soi yee-sip-sawm" ( soi 23).

Once in front of Wat Khae Nok, you will encounter a moto-songtaew that acts as a shuttle to the resaurant. You can also follow the signs down the tiny side soi.

The menu is in Thai and English, with plenty of pictures. I definitely recommend the gaengsom cha oam (tamarind soup with omelet). It is quite spicy though. The mixed seafood haw mok is nice. It's like a curry custard, filled with seafood.

When done you may enjoy exploring Nonthaburi a bit. It's a little more "traditional" than much of Bangkok. Many of the outlying cities are similar to Nonthaburi.

You may notice a large prison, just north of the pier. This is the famous Bangkwang Central Prison, aka the "Bangkok Hilton". Bangkwang is home to Thailand's death row.

There is a very busy marketplace, a short ways up Pracharat, the main road leading inland from the pier. There's no telling what you might find there!

Be sure to head back to the pier fairly early. The boats stop around sunset. You can always try for a taxi, but the boats make it so easy.

Anyway, if you become "templed out" during you visit to Bangkok, Nonthaburi and Baan Rabiang Nam might be a nice, tasty break!

Enjoy....

Hi Curt,

Great recommendation. I will definately give it a go on my next trip and I will post a review.

Is it possible to walk from the pier in perhaps half and hour, give or take? I always prefer a walk before and after lunch and love to explore.

If you can average 10 KPH, you can make it in a half hour. It's the best part of 5 kilometers, from pier to restaurant.

It might be more interesting to explore Nonthaburi, before and after your lunch.

Curt,

I have your favourite Nonthaburi Restaurant marked in my Crossfire USB for a review. We are leaving in three weeks for Bangkok but I might be too busy on this trip to get up river to Nonthaburi. If that is the case, I will definitely review it when we return to Bangkok in June and July.
