Lightbulb Bangkok to Siem Reap

Anyone done this journey lately? When I took it a few years back it was one of the most hellish journeys out... hour upon hour of juddering on the piss-poor surface avoiding potholes the size of caves whilst having my legs slowly lose all blood squeezed into the back of a Toyota Camry. Word was that the airline with the monopoly on the route were doing "things" to make sure the road wasn't upgraded any time soon...

What's the best way to do the Bangkok to Siem Reap journey now? Anyone done it lately?

Steve, we contemplated doing this trip last year but it all became too hard. The flights for the 4 of us would have cost almost what we paid from Melbourne to Bangkok and the tales of border scams really put me off the overland trip.

At the time, I found a flight that Jetstar were doing from Singapore to Siem Reap that was very cheap and I even contemplated flying into Phnom Penh from Bangkok with Air Asia and busing down from there, but in the end we gave up. Maybe next time.

The overland trip would be an adventure, but I didn't want to risk it with the kids.

Hi Steve,
Yes the road trip is not very good crossing the border, flying from BKK to siem reap is very $$$ , as only the one airline does it i think (Bangkok Air/Siem Reap Air) -

i did this trip by flying to (PP) Phnom Pehn with Air Asia , cheaper than Thai air, & there are a few things to do & see around PP,

-

so mayb fly to PP, stay a night or 2 , then get the bus up to Siem Reap, it was a big air/con bus comfy seats & tv. and was about $9.00 aust.(2 years ago) takes 4/5 hours , it wasnt to bad a trip at all, about 1/2 way into bus trip u stop at a small vilage , for lunch break, strech legs etc,
it is quite interesting here as this small village , is well known for its tarantulars spiders, in small amrket at bus stop u will see many locals with plastic buckets with these huge live spiders, they pick them up & drop them into a hot oil & deep fry them , u can buy a bag of deep fried spiders , (i wasn't brave enough to try them) , u see these locals walking around with a big trays with 100,s of fried spiders , trying to get u to buy them,
as they were picking them up out of bucket alive, others would crawl up their arm , one lady said "u pick one up, let him walk u arm , no bite u" " i said thanks but no thanks"

the town is called Snoul.

then on way back from Siem Reap - fly to BKK but $$$ , or get bus back to PP ,stay & look around or fly straight back 2 BKK,

good luck
