Mack a good pair of boots and a hammock with a mossie net build in. If you are walking long distances a good comfortable back pack. I assume you will be on some sort of tour, they should take care of the rest. Jim

Living in Thailand I spend a lot of time hiking, camping in national parks and visiting hill tribe villages.

Here are some things you should bring along with you.

Insect repellent
sun screen
Long and short sleeved shirts
Long and short pants
a light jacket
good walking shoes or boots
flip flop shoes (you can get here cheap if you like)
extra socks
hat
good sunglasses
a towel
wash cloth or sponge
bio-degradable soap/shampoo
camera
pen light
ear plugs (Frogs, insects in the jungle and pigs, chickens in hill tribe villages can be very loud at night and very early morning)
zip lock bags
small day pack

Have fun,
Randy

Hi Mark
Where are you planning on going to in Thailand for this hiking in the jungle, because there are some places that are not all that safe. Where I live there are still a lot of unexploded bombs, as well as poachers along the boarder. I have to say that I often go walk about myself, but I have been up here for 7 years on and off and am pretty well know in the area[ being the only Farang in the district] Always best to be a bit careful. My preference is for quick dry material, but it mostly comes down to personal choice.

I recommend tiger balm for insect bites. If you want to see wildlife at night, also think about taking a medium power headlamp with a red filter.

Where do you plan on doing this jungle adventure? Some trek out of Chiang Mai? Or will a day at the Flight of the Gibbon park be enough?

Most tourists ride to the jungle areas in tourist passenger vans or on buses. They get out and walk around a bit and get back on the air conditioned bus. They wear just about anything from simple sneakers and t-shirt and shorts or some go out of their way with jungle shirts and matching shorts. Most tourists using the tourist vans just wear what is handy.

On long trips always carry a spare roll of toilet paper, hand wipes and sun protection. If you wear a hat wear it the way it was designed with the bill shading your face and keeping rain off your glasses.

Bangkok is a modern city with subways, skyscrapers, overhead rail service. Most "jungle areas" have roads, Seven Eleven style stores and usually scheduled transportation. If you are expecting porters carrying your bags into something like the old movies on Darkest Africa - don't get your hopes up! Although there are some nice national parks.
