Default Anybody been comin to thailand for 35 years

I would like to hear from some of you old timers. Tell us what it was like back then?

Come you old pioneers. Nevermind the food courts. Tell us about some stories to make our hearts perk up with interest.

If you have any old pics too please post them on the forum.

Knock yourself out.

35 years? That's a bit... specific, isn't it?

Regardless, it's a good idea for a thread. I'd love to see some pics from back in the day.... any snaps pre-1990 would be interesting to me...

I first went in 1981, and even then I felt I had missed the "good times", but saying that I had an amazing time. Spent 3 weeks on Koh Samui and another 6 weeks travelling around all over the place. In those days not many people in Markets etc spoke English so everything was done in mime, it was so funny. Also on Koh Samui a bag of ganga was Bt50, and LOTS of places sold it. Also mushrooms were very much the going thing . Here's a pic I took.

First went on R&R leave in 1967. Nine days in Bangkok and 10 days in Pattaya. Hated both places intensely and vowed never to go back. Just goes to show one should never utter the word "never".

Thanks for the photo's FBI. It is great to look back 30 years, especially as I can visualize the locations that these photos were taken from my trip 6 months ago.

Even in 1968, Indian tailor shops were everywhere!!!

Not 35 years ago, but here is an old self portrait of me at the bungalow I stayed at on Patong Beach back in the early 80’s. Yes, there were still bamboo bungalows on the beach in Patong at that time! I don’t remember how much I paid, but I do remember there were still 80 baht bungalows outside of Patong. Back then, much of everything outside of Patong closed down during the low season, and even much of Patong shut down. I arrived during low season as I knew there would be surf at that time. I only saw one other Surfer while I was there.
After my stay in Patong, I went to look up a friend that had been running a small Bar Beer for many years in Pattaya. I told him what a great time I had on Phuket, and I remember him telling me that Phuket would never amount to much because business was “seasonal”, could stay open only in high season, and you would have to shut down and find another way to make a living the rest of the year. Sure wish I hadn’t listened to his words of “wisdom”!
