Then there are all the drunken hillbillies with fireworks!

Official dates 13-15 April.

In Kata, and most places on Phuket, it will only be celebrated 1 day. And that day will end mostly around 16.00 hours as well. So Michelle, be prepared to get a bit wet, but nothing really spectacular at the end of the day.

Only one day and it's all finished by 4PM. Wow I sure wish I could experience a Songkran like that. If I wasn't flying out of the country next April I'd head for Phuket.

In Patong they tend to start a day earlier, so on the 12th, and there it tends to drag on a bit as well. But on the rest of Phuket: just one day, and I find it fun that way.

Last Songkran here in Khon Kaen it was 3 days, starting mid-morning and going until about 9PM. Every single street was blocked with traffic. I had to go out for a meal and it took hours. I hate bloody Songkran.

When I was stuck in the traffic jam I watched this old man pushing his cart down the street, he had the coal fire and sold "Kai Ping" (BBQ eggs) and I watched these ****&%$# throwing water at him, all laughing their asinine faces off. It wouldn't occur to them that this old man can't sell wet eggs and if he don't sell eggs he don't make any money for 3 days and can't eat for 3 days.

The official date for Songkran is always April 12. This is the Thai New Year so the date is always the same just like Jan. 1 is for other countries.. Loi Krathong changes date depending on the moon cycle but Songkran is always the same.

Cheers,
Randy

Randy,

Your posting is completely correct except for the official date, with is April 13, not 12.
I understand where you're coming from though, because in Chiang mai they start celebrating way before that and end way after that.

[I am leaving Phuket on 13th April to come back to OZ. From what people are saying it sounds like it will take ages to get to the airport. I have already booked a private driver and he did not indicate it may be a problem
