Question Badly Sprained ankle - How to get around ?

Hello, I am new to the Forum, My family and I are leaving for Thailing in 8 days, but my 16 yr Old daughter has just sprained her ankle quite bad, even possible Ligament damage, and I am very fearful it will be still to sore to talk on. She is currently on Crutches. Any idea's of how to get around in Thailand, maybe I could hire a Wheel Chair from a Hospital ?? please help, has anyone been in this situation before.
thanks heaps
JanoE

That's bad luck JanoE, to have that happen just before a Thailand holiday. You don't say where in Thailand you'll be - and this makes a big difference - for example in Bangkok it will be hellish trying to walk around those crowded streets (often the entire footpath it taken up with stalls, forcing you onto the road). Even getting around Bangkok on crutches or in a wheekchair will drive you nuts. Yes, you can rent a wheelchair easily from a hospital or even some large pharmacy shops. But I'd be inclined to get right out of Bangkok fast and head for a more laidback place like Koh Samui where your daughter can make her way from the room down to the beach and flop in a chair under a coconut tree.

ouch, bummer. as Bob points out, thailand, isn't very wheel chair or crutches friendly for that matter. i not extremely large, or small either, and it's a hassle negotiating the sidewalks/streets. may i suggest she start practicing with a cane, should make things easier. if never using, its best just to put right next to foot, but a tad lower, and support weight with upper body to cane, as if cane attached to leg. works fine for me when things act up.

but be careful, as it's easy to trip, strolling in thailand being quite healthy

Default Oh Dear......

We are flying into Bangkok for 3 days shopping ....( not looking good now), but lucky as you have suggested, we re heading to Koh Samui for 1 week then onto Phuket for another week. These 2 locations might be easier, but sounds like Bangkok could be a nightmare. JanoE

Yes, life for your daughter will certainly be easier in Samui & Phuket. Unfortunately I can't think of any good suggestions for BKK, even going somewhere by BTS won't be easy due to the stairs. If your hotel has a pool perhaps your daughter can spend 3 days by the pool while the rest of you go shopping. Hope it all works out well for you.

Default what about the cinema?

We have heard it can be a real 'experience' to visit the cinema in the large shopping plazas like centralworld. something we keep meaning to do but haven't gotton around to yet.

I don't find Thai cinemas to be any different to Australian cinemas, except that Thai cinemas turn the volume up by about 200%.

You may consider an evening dinner cruise on the Chaophyara River, these are real nice to do and shouldn't present any difficulties for your daughter. Especially if you travel by meter taxi from hotel to the cruise boat.

Well the easy answer is ...limp.

Tape it up and do the best she can. You can always leave her at the pool. Wheel chair is always an option.
