Prices are set for Thais but wildly inflated for tourists, you will have to negotiate but the tuk-tuks are a mafia and have agreed among themselves what to charge tourists, so be prepared to be screwed. A way to beat the system is to rent a motorcycle or little Suzuki jeep for the duration of your holiday. This is what I always used to do - rent a Suzuki from a car rental just outside the airport, that way I avoided the costly taxi fares from the airport and back again at the end of my holiday. If the idea appeals to you search the Net for car rentals near Phuket airport and make a phone call. They'll even come to collect you at the airport and take you back to the office to sign the lease. Way to go in my opinion.

Default Tuk Tuks

on phuket are a massive rip off - they are little vans unlike tuktuks in BKK - between resorts they are very expensive as Bobmac says hire a car I would stay away from motorbikes too dangerous IMHO - I have been on the island 9 times now and 8 of those times have hired a car -
there are plenty of car hire places opposite the airport but I have now settled on David Car Rent - Autos Car Van Truck Rentals Phuket Thailand - they will meet you at the airport - take a look at the bottom of the page where you will find from the airport prices to resorts one way in same cases more than hiring a car for the day

Thanks Guys - are there no metered taxis ??
Or have the Tuk Tuk mafiosa got rid of them ?
We are 2 families travelling together, we might hire a driver/van for a few days,
and have them on standby for whenever we want to go anywhere ?

Last year they wanted 200 baht along one side of patong to the other. We walked and spent the money on a drink on the way !
they are lined up idle in their dozens and they can stay that way they are a total rip.
Pattaya have the baht buses and make a good industrious living.
It really put me off Phuket last time we went.

No meter taxis in Phuket. I read on this forum recently they were charging tourists 500Bt to go from Karon to Patong. I haven't been to Phuket for some years now but always rented a motorcycle and never used the tuk-tuks. As you are 2 families traveling together I'd definetely weigh up renting a vehicle from outside the airport for the duration of your holiday. You'll save heaps in the end and will have the convenience of being able to go anywhere anytime, explore the whole island at your leisure, and you won't have any bad feelings about being cheated by tuk-tuks.
