Default Doi Suthep?

Hi everyone
We're planning a trip to north Thailand and am wondering if anyone has heard of this village a few hours ride away from Chiang Mai. We won't be in Chaing Mai long enough to do a real trek to experience the hilltribes, but I remember this village Doi Supthep from about 20 years ago that was only a few hours ride by truck from Chiang Mai. Is it still there or are there other villages nearby for a day trip?

In my original message above I wrote "Doi Suthep", when I meant to write "Doi Pui" or something. I think that Doi Suthep is a famous temple or used to be a royal summer palace or something?

But there was this village beyond that that was close enough for a day trip from Chiang Mai. I believe it was Meo Hilltribes people whose village it was. Of course this was in 1985! So it's probably not there anymore.

Back then I took a bus from Chiang Mai to Fang, then trekked several days to a distant village. It was fabulous. On the way back, I rode a long canoe along the Mae Kok River. There was a Thai soldier on board with a mounted machine gun pointing to the shore on the watch for snipers and we made lots of stops to pick up local people going from village to village. AAhh, to be young again.

Does anyone know if there are any hilltribe villages close enough to Chiang Mai for a day trip? Thanks!
