Cool Travel Insurance and the Bangkok Crisis

Friends

I heard a news report on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation yesterday evening wherein an Australia traveller caught up in the Bangkok airports blockade complained that Mondial Travel Insurance were refusing to provide cover on the basis that the blockades were "an act of terrorism". This was, apparently, because someone had been pictured waving a hand grenade around - not at the airport, mind you, but on the streets of Bangkok.

Mondial is a major supplier/underwriter of travel insurance. I, for one, will be very careful in my choice of travel insurance provider next time I travel.

Best regards to all

Mark

From a Google search:

"Mondial is one of the world's largest assistance organisations and one of Australia's most prominent travel wholesalers.

Part of the Allianz group, Mondial also operates a 24/7 global response centre."

And..

"Mondial Travel Insurance is offered on the basis that global assistance is our speciality (Mondial is the French word for "worldwide"). Our mission is to help customers avoid and manage travel risks, particularly where medical emergency, auto breakdown, and medical repatriation are concerned."

Hmmmm.

I think you will find that most travel ins wont cover the costs!

What about the people who couldnt fly out this week as well as the one stuck in Thailand? The airline may give them a new flight but cant see the travel ins company's paying out for all that lost accomadation!

Most travel insurance I have had doesnt cover for Riot and civil unrest anyway.

most insurers of any type will try to get out of anything at all that they can do.

It all depends on your policy so perhaps checking policies before obtaining travel insurance is the way to go. I guess in saying that though, nobody really expects this sort of thing to happen but then again, that's what travel insurance is about: expecting the unexpected!

I agree though, it's completely unfair for those who are unwillingly "trapped" in Thailand with no way home.

I know I wouldn't be complaining if I was stuck in Thailand though (unless I have run out of money of course!). I'd be happy for the legitimate excuse as far as work is concerned which allowed me to stay an extra week!!

I think the insurance companies are dispicable. It has just cost us £3000 extra to get home and the extra 5 nights accommodation, not to mention the time lost from work and the insurance company don't want to pay anything.
