Thailand Sun Samui & Koh Phangan in September - HELP!

Hi everyone!

I know it's been awhile since I last posted or have even been on this site so sorry about that! I've been busy organsing my Dad a surprise party! It's a "Just Because" party to celebrate his life and show him how much love and support he has. I figure it's better he knows all this whilst he's still around instead of doing it when he no longer is. So anyway, this has taken up a huge amount of my time lately so sorry about not participating!

I was just wondering if anybody could help me out. When Kristy returns from her trip in September, I was thinking that her and I could take a trip back to Thailand (and yes, I know she's just spent 3 months in SE Asia!). I want to spend some time with her though and just relax, have a laugh, get disgustingly drunk each and every night and just do what best friends do really. I was thinking we could do the whole Samui and Koh Phangan thing again as they don't have time to make it there at the moment. I was just wondering what the weather was like in mid to late September. I don't want it to be raining every day, that's all. I love the rain but just not for the whole time I'm on holiday. Otherwise, if the weather is terrible, it may have to be a Bali job...being a Thailand girl at heart though, I'm unsure as to whether Bali would live up to my expectations after falling in love with LOS!

Any advice would be fabulous though!

Ali x

P.S Mark, are you in Portugal at the moment? If so, any news on the English girl, Maddy? I thought you might be able to get me an inside scoop.

P.P.S Also, Jax, if you read this - I hope you are having an amazing time! Have loved your emails so keep them coming!

Hi Ali,
I was on the west coast of KPN for a couple of weeks mid to late September last year getting disgustingly drunk with young people and the weather was very bearable. Rained a little once or twice in the evening if I remember right but didn't stop play at all, we had a great time. The weather seems to be a bit strange this year though...is El Nino back or something?

Unhappy Hi Ali

Good to see you back although not so sure about your font colour!

Madeleine McCann is still missing (as of last night). Speculation was that child traffickers were responsible; let us still hope so as this is the best of all the worst options it seems. However there has been very recent news that the Portuguese police have formally said a British man staying at the same apartments is a suspect, which is really not a good thing, as this would almost certainly mean the little girl is no longer alive. It is also an irony and sad testament perhaps that a fellow Brit is under suspicion. Perhaps this had something to do with the British specialist child abuse police officers who came to Portugal with a list of known British pedophiles who come to Portugal. People even in this region, the other side of Portugal are in shock over this event; they really do not know how such a thing could happen. I get asked all the time here if I have heard any extra news; such is the level of concern and bewilderment. This aspect or risk of life is one of the many reasons we decided not to settle in Britain.

Hi Ali and welcome back :)

What a fabulous idea having a party to celebrate your fathers life and achievements (applause here...).

I was in Samui September'ish' last year and I agree, the weather was brilliant with only maybe 2 showers in the evening. It was naturally still hot but not "over the top don't want to go anywhere" hot.

From what I can gather from Jax's emails sounds like she is having a blast wouldn't you agree? Lucky thing (jealousy is so unattractive!).

Take care matey

Talking Don't let the weather stop you

Hi Ali

We just got back after almost a month on KPN. It is our favourite home away from home. This was I think the seventh time we have been there, since 1993. We have been there at all different times of the year, at all different beaches on the island, and it has always been fantastic. Of course, in the monsoon season, it is supposed to rain. But even then, it doesn't rain all day. Buckets down for an hour or so, then back to the sunshine. Plus, it might rain during the night (to help you sleep . Also, the island seems to have its own weather patterns. It can be pouring on Samui, and sunny on Koh Pha Ngan.

As a matter of fact - and concern - global warming seems to be having its impact on the island. While we were there, the public water supply was only working for two hours a day - from 6 am to 8 am. This was because they had had far less rainfall than average. However, many resorts pump from their own wells, so the average backpacker/traveller would not even be aware of the problem.

My advice - if you liked Koh Pha Ngan last time, go back. You will find whatever you liked there last time, and then some. We were there for Songkran this year (our first Songkran), which was the most fantastic daytime party you can imagine, where everyone on the island gets fully involved. And you would never have guessed there was a water shortage that day...)

Happy to give more info if you want.
