Default Most Exotic SEAsian Foods

CathyP got me thinking about some of the foods that are eaten in SEAsia that would be considered exotic or strange to most Westerners.

What's the strangest food you have ever eaten in SE Asian that you actually tried, disliked or loved? include a short description of what it is.

I like eating sliced green mango with bagoong (fermented salted fish).
Smells really stinky but makes my mouth water just writing this.

Hmmm. Tree rats in Laos and grubs, crickets and cockroaches on Sukhumvit. Unfortunately due to technical problems I haven't got any pics to make Mark salivate.

I'm actually quite a fussy eater in UK, but do try more in LOS (no choice really).
Tom Yam Goong is one of my favourites . Only ever had it in Thailand.
I also enjoyed some type of pancake, which is griddled and filled with an egg-whie like substance and some orange coloured strands - lovely sweet taste.
A third (not so exotic or strange though) is Mango and sticky rice.

Just three weeks 'til we return and looking forward to the food as much as anything else. Cabbages and Condoms on the first night for Tom Yam Goong and Red curry with chicken with Mango and sticky rice to finish , with a few Singha's to accompany (cool the mouth).

In Chiang Mai, and ants, and locusts. You can tell the items that you may not want to eat in most traditonal restaurants, they avoid putting these in Thai and English

I've actually had the ants and they tasted okay. Not what I expected but then I didn't know what I was eating at the time.

I tried some deep fried silk worms at a road side stall outside Chang Mai last trip....They were crisp and crunchy. My wife wasn't keen to try them. I don't think I could have them too often. Grass hoppers were also on offer but I passed on these.

I had turtle sate. It grosses me out to think about it because I love turtles, truth be told it tasted like chicken..

Green mango with bagoong now that one sounds interesting...I like green mango with shoyu and vinegar. I've never tried bagoong, but..... I like patis, which is a milder version..hummm

I'm assuming you ate the honu in Indonesia. I confess, I tasted honu in Hawaii waaaaaay back in the 80's before they were on the endangered/banned list and it tasted like chicken to me too. Shame, shame on me - it's my amakua.
