Default First time in Thailand

Hey everyone,
Im heading to Thailand for 4 weeks in Aug on my own. Flying into Bangkok and needed some advice on a few things,
Firstly Ive had many ppl suggest staying on Khao san Rd. Im not on a hugely tight budget but am more keen on meeting people. and making friends. And iy sounds like Khao san rd is the place to go. Thoughts????
Have some ideas of a couple of places Id like to go to and see. Id like to head to the Tiger temple and see the elephants and all that. Chiang Mai is another place Id like to visit. Was basically thinking Id spend the first 2 weeks Bangkok/north Thailand making my way down south for the last 2 weeks to go island hopping for a bit of relaxation before heading back to Bangkok for a bit of shopping prior to flying back to Melbourne. Any suggestions???

A couple of weeks in BKK/North; then a couple of weeks island-hopping sounds good to me. Nothing wrong with that plan. In August I think you'll find Samui and the Gulf islands a better bet weather-wise.
KSR really depends on how old you are. It's mostly a younger set there, it's not really tight budget travelers either as many places to stay at KSR are not all that cheap, and you can find far cheaper elsewhere in BKK. It's good for meeting up with the younger set, making friends to travel with, and getting current info. I recommend it as you're on your own.
