The anti-smoking thing came in big in the 70s and skyrocketed from there. Mind you I'm not bemoaning the lost good old days. I gave up fags/reefers/cigars/bongs many moons ago and I'm really glad I did.

Geri, I can't remember with MAS, I think you're right they probably do serve grog. I know for sure Royal Brunei do not.
I usually have about five beers in the departure lounge before boarding (I fly business), then I have a wine with dinner/lunch and another four or five beers sometimes more during the flight. I have never felt jet-loagged or inebriated in 45 years of flying. However BobMac, I've never smoked anything, cigarettes, MaryJane or anything else.
When I was in Vietnam during the 60s, most of my platoon smoked MaryJane. The majority of them are now on the Veteran's Pension, while I'm still working and enjoying wine and beer. I think the affects of marijuana have been largely overlooked, and it is only now when my generation is reaching retirement age that the social scientists are beginning to take note of the poor physical and mental health of those who smoked pot during the lifetimes, or for greater parts of their lifetimes.

Couldn't agree more. I don't know anybody who does dope in Thailand but I've got a few mates back in Perth who like to doobie and when I'm with them and they're stoned I reckon they act like dopes. I wish I had of spent more time being productive in my 20s,30s,40s and less time whacked. I also find I'm drinking far less these days, I prefer the nice feeling of being sober and clear headed, far more enjoyable than having a muddled mind.

I've got to say that I had a little chuckle when I read the posts on this. Couldn't stop laughing when my husband said he could relate to the posts. Yes age is catching up with us. My husband in his younger days would drink from the time the plane took off. Now things are so different.

Gotta say though, I will be having a few on the plane, but wouldn't get too carried away in my older years.

Default Barkeep your best cognac please

I certainly like to have a couple of drinks on the plane. A champagne as soon as I sit, maybe a pre dinner cocktail if it's a long flight, a wine or 2 with my meal and a nice cognac and choc to round off.
I'm not driving:) , but I do agree about being sober when landing in Thailand. They don't really take kindly to inebriated persons.

Don't drink on flights as it can lead to queasieness but i do miss my smokes. Also since most flight to my holiday haunts--Thailand and Bali leave at the crack of dawn alcohol is not a consideration
Used to arrive at my destination with my usual smokers cough but otherwise none the worse off .Since smoking was banned inflight I seem to pick up some lurgy or other.I reckon the smoke screen used to keep the germs away --thats my theory and I'm sticking to it.
Cheers laurs

Whilst I can't drink on a flight HOWEVER! it's another story once we get there... it's tradition to crack open the duty free and celebrate the start of our holiday.
One year on our return from England we called into Phuket for some R & R, so after the longish flight and we were so happy to be back at our favourite hotel... we had a few round the pool then realised the local time. We must have looked like a pair of alcoholics drinking at 10:00.
Cheers Geri

I have to agree with you! I always catch a cold after flying but never did when I smoked onboard.

More than likley age and a slightly lower imune system in the smoker that causes them to get it first.

My two middies worth...All the above advice is on the mark RE drinking. From my experiences to Thailand Singapore & Phillipines the good old days of them serving you until you almost passed out are long long gone.I think the most i`ve had on a plane is 5 cans & then they were reluctant to serve me the last 2 after the meal trays had been cleared.I do suggest if you do have some alcohol that you keep the water up after your alcohol. As other have stated a clear head is best when dealing with immigration & all the other things you need to deal with like taxi`s, hotel transfer etc.

Cheers

Jamie

In the last few years they have stopped people from drinking their own duty free on the flights I have done except for the royal Brunei flights.!
