You can buy a joint Train/Bus/ferry ticket with overnight sleeper for 1200 bt + from Bangkok.

The night train goes to Suratani then the bus to the ferry pier then ferry to Samui where you get the ferry to Phangan.

You can get a Bus combo ticket fron Bangkok to Chumpon and the ferry will take you to Koh Tao then Koh Phangan and Samui last about $40.00

If you are going to the FMP in Jan you will need to book accomodation well in advance as this is the high season and a lot of places are full on Phangan and Samui.

Have a look at Sawadee.com - Thailand tourism portal - Hotel and Resort reservations to get an idea.

What a lot of people don't realize before making their trips is just how easy it is to organize onward travel, accommodation, tours & daytrips once you are actually at your destination. I see people all the time really arranging everything before they depart but you never really know what you want to do and when you want to do it until you are there. Certainly if you want to do a short holiday and visit several destinations it's more comfortable to have everything set up in advance but for budget travelers and long-holidays I suggest deciding what to do and where to go after you arrive. At the tourist meccas in Thailand there are zillions of tour and travel agents all offering competative prices on everything available.
For young aussies: there are ferries directly to KP, some may dock at KS first for a short period then continue. From KP you can arrange your onward travel to Phuket, plus accomm' at Phuket. As young fellas after action you should stay at Patong. Don't forget to wear condoms and beware of the Thai shelias with adam's apples.
