Default FAO Kitty....30kg baggage???

Kitty, you've mentioned this a couple of times I think.

"PS ... remember if you are flying Thai airways that their luggage limit for checked in is actually 30kg flying out and 25kg flying home AND NOT 20KG EACH WAY AS STATED ON YOUR TICKET!!!!!"
It's a bit of a weird deal as we usually come back home with MORE than we leave with, not less.

I'd be most interested to know where you found out about this as I've never been told/heard about this before.

I always have 30kg on any flight with Thai as I'm a Royal Orchid member with enough flights/points to allow me such privileges, but I have never heard of this being given to non-members flying Australia-Thailand.

My mother flew Melb-Bkk in January and nobody told her about that (me included because as I've said, I've never heard of that)

A friend will be making her first visit to Thailand in a few months time and flying with Thai. I'll pass this info on if there's no risk she'll be charged excess baggage.
So can you say where you found out about this?

I too was puzzled by the post as we are regular flyers with Thai Airways... it's alway been 20kg and 7 kg for carry on luggage, same as other airlines in economy.
We are Royal Orchid Plus members as get 30kg for loyalty.
I'm thinking that whoever weighed in Kitty's bags is giving out incorrect information and possibly let Kitty through without charging excess (just my thoughts)
I read on another forum that Garuda frequent flyer program is reducing their 30kg to 25kg because of fuel costs... only hope Thai don't go the same way as it's one of the main reasons we fly with them... that and their 34" seat pinch and their wonderful flight crew.
Cheers Geri

Gee i`d be very careful most airlines are now heading back & enforcing the 20 kg 7 kg limits for cattle class due to rising fuel costs.I got fined on Singapore Airlines 12 mnths ago $20 AUD per kilo I was over.I was well over & they could have got me for more. You`re normally fine if you`re just a couple over but I wouldn`t push it.

Well ... it goes like this...

I had written an email to Thai because I wanted to find out the dimensions of carry on luggage mainly cos I didnt know which case to take, they sent me back an email stating exactly what it says on their website, about carry on measurements and their 7kg limit, AND ALSO THAT THEIR CHECKED-IN LIMIT WAS 20KG PER PIECE FOR ECONOMY.

... But when we checked in at Sydney airport we were told by the lady at the check-in counter (I obviously dont remember her name!) that we were actually allowed the 30kg going over and 25 kg coming home. I had told her that I was quite annoyed at that as I had specifically asked Thai all about this, and no-one mentioned it.

So ... going over we obviously had less than 20kg each checked in piece (think they were all about 18) BUT ... coming home we all had over 20kg each piece - my 2 checked in pieces were both about 24kilos and my friends were also, and all was fine - def no excess luggage charged. So ... I was therefore of the opinion that this lady at Sydney check-in was correct, cos if she wasnt then I would have been charged for excess luggage.

So ... as I said I do not have this in writiting, only what I was told at Sydney check-in counter. I def had no problems leaving BKK with 24 kg in each checked in luggage piece.

Hopefully this clarifies it for you - like I said - I wdnt take it as gospel, because I do not have it in writing. If I were you (or your friend) I would take 20kg going over and def ask at check-in what the limits are, at least that way you are safe going over, and can then pack whatever kg they say coming home. And get the persons full name that tells you if its 25kg coming home - just in case you have problems!~!~!

I wd def not give you false or misleading information - ONLY WHAT I HAD BEEN TOLD!

Kitty

Default luggage

luggage is normally 20 kg per passenger not per piece so never heard of anyone getting 2 pieces through with 24 kgs in each.

I think she meant 24 kg each for the 2 of them!

I am also sure that 20kg is the standard for economy cheched luggage but have also been told at check in that they let you go with 24kg most times b4 they charge excess baggage.

I wouldnt ever count on it though, because usually people check in together and both cases over by 4kg = 8kg! Not sure also if you would get away with it on the Thai side espesially fully booked flights?

(some cheaper Airlines have only18kg)

Some time ago when we were booking flights, we couldn't get on a Thai Airways flight as they were full, so we booked with Singapore Airlines - it's in the Star Alliance group to which Thai Airways belongs.

When we got to checkin, the guy at the counter said my bag (26kg) was too heavy. I'd already given him my Royal Orchid card so I told him that as a Royal Orchid member I had a 30kg baggage allowance.
"You're allowed 30kg with Thai but with other airlines in Star Alliance group it's 20kg.That's policy"
He didn't impose any excess baggage but it's worth knowing about this.

You know, I agree with all of you - IT DOESNT SOUND RIGHT AND I WDNT COUNT ON IT MYSELF!! But ... I was only stating what I had been told. If I was flying Thai I wd def only pack max 20kg going over and ask and clarify what the return weight limit was ... just to be safe. We were a group of 6 who ALL had over 20kg per piece returning to Australia, so thats about 24 kg over the limit - I wd think that they would have said something about excess weight if it were a problem!

Happy packing!

Kitty

Hi Kimbo - just wondering, I too am a Royal Orchid member but with very basic points (under 5000) does this mean that just because I am a member, that I get a 30kg allowance? Would love to know as I am flying out in around 10 weeks. I also signed up the person travelling with me so I would love to be able to tell them

Hi
You have to be a silver member in order to get the extra 10k allowance. Just one annoying fact about points with Thai is that you don't get the full points if you have a ticket is some classes. We bought two tickets to Phuket for October. We could only get 1 cheap ticket in W class, this only allows half the points. The other is in Q and gets full award points.

Just seen this little gem on the ROP website... so now I'm not sure if my W ticket purchased ages ago will earn any points all... drat or words to that effect!!

***Currently *G/V/ W booking classes earn 50% of actual miles flown. From July 1, 2008 onwards travel in these booking with THAI on international route classes will no longer earn miles***

Cheers Geri
