Default Advice on passport

I have dual nationality and hold 2 passports - UK & Australia. I am currently in Thailand on the UK passport but have a valid Thai non-Imm visa in my Aust' passport which I now want to use. I tried to enter Thailand from Malaysia last week, switching to the Aust' passport but Thai immigration needs to stamp next to the Malaysia exit stamp, which is in the UK passport. In other words when entering the country they won't allow me to switch passports. What's the easiest way for me to use the Australia passport without returning to Australia and starting from scratch?

If you have a Thai visa in your AU passport will they let you out of the country on it?(Border crossing)

I cant see why they wouldt let you back in to Thailand on your AU passport? you have a visa but you also get a 30 day visitor visa on arrival?

What if you was comming in from Malasia by train for the first time?
How did customs know you were returning to Thailand on a diferent passport?

I always carry both just incase but looks like there is no point.

Sorry bobmac I see now! They needed to see your exit from malasia as this is not your country of residence. Good way to keep out the bad guys though.

When I left Oz in Jan I already had a valid non-imm visa, with a re-entry in my UK passport, I got an extra non-imm in my Oz passport and figured when the visa expired in the UK passport, I'll just go to Malaysia then re-enter Thai with the Oz passport. But the buggers have blocked that one. I've already booked a flight to Perth next week I'll have to start from scratch. Gonna cost me 27,000 Bt for return tickets, plus taxis, hotels +++. That's what happens you you try to be smart. I was trying to save myself a couple of thousand baht but will end up paying heaps more than that. Oh, well, I'll get to see mum & sis & nieces & nephews again. There's always a plus side to every situation.

Mate, don't ever use two passports anywhere in Asia. Just use the one. You will immediately come under close scrutiny and suspicion if you attempt to use two. You obviously have Australian citizenship in order to get a Oz passport. You are now only allowed to use the Australian passport when departing or re-entering Australia.

I can't see any way out other than to return and get the Thai visa re-issued into your Australian passport and USE JUST THAT PASSPORT - AND NOT ANY OTHER.

My mate ended up in Thai security interrogation for five hours in 2006 for attempting to cross from Burma back into Thailand when using different passports (Canada/Oz).

Cant you just do a visa run? A friend of mine has been there for a few years without comming back, he somtimes pays a lawyer to renew his visa when he is to lazy to do the visa run.

Dont know how it works myself ?

Actually Den that's a pretty good suggestion. I'm going to Pattaya Monday morning to have a talk with the Immigration office there (I know it's going to be a waste of time - "Mai Dai" "Mai Dai")
After that I'll pop into one of those visa run companies and see about getting the Aust' passport stamped.

The only reason I take both is to use when it is insisted you leave a passport for different reasons like bike hire ect, then I leave the spare one.

I didnt know you had to leave Australia with your AU Passport if you had dual nationality?

I used to leave Australia on my AU passport and enter UK on my British passport and vis versa just to get through customs quicker!

Mind you I havent been back to the UK since 911 so I am sure it would have changed?

Still handy to have a spare though.

Den.

How I ended up on 2 passports is when I left Aust and entered Thailand in 2006 there was a possibility of traveling on to UK & Europe, that's why I got the UK passport & started using it in 2006. However, I still used the Oz passport to enter & depart Oz, which I believe is required. What casued the bulls-up this time was getting that Thai visa into the Oz passport and thinking it would be a breeze to switch over midstream. I've now learned that's a big NO NO. And I agree that it's not a smart thing to do and could cause serious complications with security checks. We all live & learn. So forum readers should make a note of this if you also hold 2 passports.

And Den, I've gone off that idea of maybe having the passport stamped by one of those visa services in Pattaya. I've read that's criminal and in this age of computerized systems it'll no doubt show up and I'll end up in the "monkey house" Better go back to Oz. April's a lovely month and best of all I get to miss the bloody stupid Songkran Festival. YIPPPEEEE!!!!

Strange that the Thai computerized system didn't pick up on the fact that they issued two non-immigrant visas to the the same person (same name, date of birth) on two different passports?

Just out of interest, what kind of non-imm visa was it? (I seem to remember you said you were married to a Thai lady so you'd be eligable for a non-imm O marriage visa.) If so then this might be of interest to you. Multi-entry Non-o Marriage - Singapore - Thailand Forum
According to the mod on there you can get one in Singapore without having to put the 400K into a Thai bank account.
