Default Alcohol

Hi all

We are going this Friday and have a question.

How many litres of wine can be brought into Thailand?

I have searched the Forum and had a look at the Thai Customs site >> Thai Customs <<

It states 1 litre of spirituous liquor.

I take it spirituous liquor means Whiskey, Bourbon, Vodka etc. etc.

I have looked but can’t find any mention of Wine, is it the same amount allowed as whisky?

I think 1 litre means everything alcoholic, beer too. Last time I came in (Jan this year) I had two 2 litre casks of Banrock Station in my bags, I wasn't searched and didn't declare I had any excess. I think at worse they would confiscate your wine.

I know that the wine has massive tax on it and we are red wine drinkers. the amount of wine we would drink in the ten weeks we are away ( we go Friday as well) we would need another jumbo jet with us.
Think that it would not be more than a couple of bottles. They are very heavy as well.

wine is more expensive in Thailand than in Australia but not that much. A bottle of decent Aussie red will average at 450Bt - about AUD$15, the same plonk would probably cost about half that in Oz. But paying 450Bt for pleasure isn't too bad, you can spend that amount on beer in a bar in an hour. Also in the liquor sections of supermarkets you can get cheaper wine from Italy & France, a 2Lt bottle for 400Bt, not the best drop but drinkable. Some of the Thai wines are improving in quality too, a new line named Monsoon Valley is pretty good.
Anyway, you say "we" so I presume there's at least 2 of you, so put a cask each in your bags. Don't worry about carrying spirits because they really are cheap in Thai supermarkets.

Banrock eh!!!! If you are going to drink "Chateau de Cardboard" then you will do no better than Banrock Station. The big liquor outlet in our neighbourhood - Dan Murphy's - regularly sells out of Banrock, whether it is chardonnay, Shiraz, or Cab/Sav.

Great value for money and for cask wine, very good quality.

Agree a very nice drop. I bought back a Chard' and a Shiraz. The Chard' was nice with Thai seafood. The missus misjudged it and drank it quick like beer, she found out it gives you a boot.

Golden Gate was a good cask too but they stopped selling it here?

We have Penfolds in Oz jax, but I never heard of brown brothers, where's it from? Have you found any particular wines good with Thai food?

Brown Brothers is an Oz wine maker, Crouchen and Riesling (Google it) is fairly popular around $8 > $10 a bottle in bottle shops, it's not a bad drop with Thai food, it's a sweet wine which is easy to drink, I find it's sweetness is a good offset to some of the sour dishes, and doesn't give me a bad head the next day, my wife prefers something dryer.

We had a friend (Now passed) who was a Sales Manager with Elders Wines and Spirits (Now CUB I think) and we often drank some pretty expensive wines, some $50+ per bottle which I thought should have been sold to pickle onions.
