Hi has anyone stayed at Mae nam beach on Samui?
If so Pro's/con's ?

Yeah the problem with the beaches up on the north, like Mae Nam & Bo Phut, is the water isn't very nice, kinda muddy, not at all like the beach at Chewang or Lamai, it's cheaper to stay & eat & drink up on the north beaches but not nice beaches, I'd prefer to go to Lamai.

Thanks bobmak,I looked up some beach front bungalow at a good price on Mae Nam,they looked good and got great reviews,perhaps I should just stick to my original plan of 4days in Chewang and 3 in the north of Phangang? We like a bit of quite beach but also like a bit of life,In Pattaya we always stay on soi bukaw(SP) so I suppose the crowds at Chewang wont bother us too much? we try to do a bit of both while in Thailand but always have limited time and can easily make a mistake on area/beach ect.

i like Lamai as well and will maybe spend a few days there this time. i find it a smaller version of chewang. Never stayed at maenam but was looking to this time. It was always more backpacker. That was a few years ago mind.
Love chong mon during the day but don't think that there would be enough for me at night and don't want to be getting transport in and out of chewang.

Personally I prefer Lamai, the water is deeper than Chewang, plus Lamai is cheaper and far easier to get around. Chewang Beach is more scenic but the water seems shallow and you have to walk out a long way. Chewang Noi is very good and so is Choengmon, I prefer the latter two to Chewang. But in my book Lamai is best. If you haven't already booked at Koh Phangan then I recommend Hat Thong Nai Pan Noi. Really lovely beach.

I should really clarify my remark that the northern beaches are "muddy" that's not correct, muddy was the wrong word, for whatever reason the water never seems to be crystal clear like Chewang, I think it's probably due to silt rather than mud. That's why Chewang and Lamai were the first beaches developed and remain the most popular, BoPhut & MeaNam just don't have very nice sea water at their beaches.

I will start looking at Lemia! is there still plenty of things going on there? I will also lookup Phangang again.
Is the flight from Samui to Bkk easy to book fron Samui? And do you know a rough price? Just incase I dont want to do the train back.

Yep, lots happening at Lamai last time I was there. I think the flight is easy to book, I've been told it's an expensive flight, plus the Samui departure tax is expensive. Mind you I've never done the flight, usually drive there. There are a zillion tour and travel agents all over Samui so you'll have no trouble lining up transportation back to the capital.

You will pay about 4,000 bhat one way at the moment on bangkok airways.
