Very few other Thai islands have quite this degree of development even though Ko Samet is, in theory, a national park.

just out of interest which other Thai islands have you been to? Have you been to any of the islands around Trang for example?

I'm not sure what your point was when you mentioned you were the only non-Thai guest at your expensive resort? Were you implying that this made it non-touristy? Those Thais were tourists just like you, not locals, and Thai tourists tend to head for better known destinations such as Phuket. They've often never even heard of many of the less well known Thai islands.

Also Thais generally spend more money when on holiday than most westerners do. This is because they get very little paid vacation time ...just a few days a year. They make sure they have as good a time as possible during their short period away from work Look around next time you go to Ko Samet ... is it the westerners who stay in the cheapest beach huts or the Thais?

Because of its close proximity to BKK and the high demand for accommodation, none of the resorts on Ko Samet are particularly good value for money compared to other places in Thailand.

Nevertheless, they may well seem very affordable if you only compare them to the price of a Western hotel and Ko Samet isn't quite as developed as the Costa del Sol yet!
No to Trong and low level bungalows, huts and shacks are not really "resorts "to me!

My expensive resorts as you call them are pretty basic as you well know and not that expensive anyway, admitedley I may not be as well traveled in Thailand as you but can afford to go up a bit on price and quality these days!

Why are you being so agresive? What are "you" implying?
Blue Peter Badge?

I don't mean to sound aggressive and I'm not sure what you mean by "Blue peter badge". However I do strongly disagree with some of your statements about Ko Samet...particularly your assertion that it's the only island that hasn't been spoilt too much. Go and check out somewhere like Ko Ngai before too many resorts get built there too and get back to me on that one.

The fact that Ko Samet is classed as a national park is a joke. Have you walked along the coastal path? Note the huge piles of polystyrene and other unbiodegradable trash that's been dumped in the wooded areas. There are also persistent rumours that raw sewerage gets pumped into the sea every night. The coral reefs are all but totally destroyed. Sand is taken from the beaches and used for the never ending construction work....see how little sand is left on Candlelight beach for example....is that what you call unspoilt?

And why do you recommend the busiest tackiest beach on the island to someone who says "i want somewhere quiet and beautiful, away from the crowds" when there are other slightly quieter beaches on Ko Samet?

Very strange and somewhat misleading.

Bobmac's suggestion about the Sunset Village Resort sounds promising.... it's not very well known and not quite as easy to get to which always helps when it comes to escaping the hordes. It might be just the ticket .....even if they did have to import sand to make a nice beach...hopefully it wasn't sand from Ko Samet?

I am just a tight wad and cant bring myself to pay some of the prices they charge on Samet and somtimes forget that not everyone is likeminded
Perhaps I still conjure memories of my first visit to Samet in 1990 after spending 5 weeks in Pattaya, which was a welcome refuse?

I take your point fully and am perhaps a bit bias as we love Samet and visit often, and when you see a place grow in front of you then it doesnt really seem to grow that much!

I think Samet is a great place to visit when you have limited time left in BKK and just want to get away from it a bit, and after seeing it mentioned in the travel colums in the Aussie news papers and talk about building bigger resorts there I thought it would be a good suggestion to get an Island break so close to BKK before its too spoilt.

No street hawkers, no peddlers to ask you to buy something, nobody to ask if you want a taxi or a tuk tuk, few tourists but peaceful settings
Looks nice, what place is this?

I'm a tight wad too, that's why I stay at Ban Phe and just go to Samet for the day, then back to Ban Phe in the late afternoon. I can't afford the prices they charge at Samet. We (my Thai wife and I) both love Samet and go there often. In fact last year we made our first trip to Koh Chang and stayed 1 night, we weren't impressed at all, so we cut the stay there short and went to Koh Samet instead on the way back. In our opinion Samet is way better than Chang. There are many things I don't like about Samet (all the things Fio has mentioned) but warts & all we like the island and feel it's the nearest best place for us. We usually walk down the beach to Tok Little Hut and rent a couple of deckchairs there, under the trees, with an esky of beer. No complaints from us.

Yes we were also a bit dissapointed with koh Chang at first and wished we had gone to Samet instead! But after riding around the island a bit we found some great cheap bungalows on Kai Bae beach(Bit quite and isolated though) and had a good few days there, was also close to the fishing village, but alas even the high rise building work had spread to there and i think the bungalows have now become part of a much bigger development!

The main strip at white sand beach was constant jack hammers and cement trucks and I dont think I would bother with Chang again.

That is what I meant about Samet being low rise and unspoilt if you can call it unspoilt, there is no major building works going on along the beach and although crowded somtimes I have never had to remove sombodies left beach towel to free up a beach chair.

That one trip to Koh Chang was in November 2007 and the island resembled a building site, we thought it was terrible. We stayed at some resort down the bottom of the west coast and that was OK but rather expensive compared to elsewhere. We visited the "white sand beach" and I thought it was a lousy beach, the sand wasn't very white and the water didn't have a nice color (seemed murky to me) So as I said we bolted for Samet. I'm not really aware of any construction/building on my several visits to Samet, but I've hardly been around the island. What I don't like is the trash & dog turds I see about the place, plus those inconsiderate Thai macho-men who tear around on motorbikes & utes pushing tourists out of the way. But in terms of a picturesque beach and a nice relaxing day in a deck chair, Samet is great.

Glad I havnt been back then because it was a building site around white sand beach in Feb 2005.

I also wondered why it was called white sand beach? But there is some great areas on Chang for those willing to ride around a bit and find them.
